Lando Norris dodges FIA fine in shocking gala twist as McLaren unveils major 2026 plans

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, Lando Norris has narrowly escaped facing a hefty €5,000 fine for an expletive-laden acceptance speech at the prestigious FIA prize-giving gala. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem revealed he almost slapped the penalty on the McLaren star after Norris candidly acknowledged the team’s “fair share of mistakes and f**k ups” during his heartfelt speech. This revelation comes at a time when the FIA is cracking down on swearing, having introduced a controversial ban that will come into full effect in 2025. Fortunately for Norris, it seems the FIA president appreciated the spirit of the moment and let the young driver off the hook.

In other thrilling news, Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, has officially confirmed what many have speculated: the team’s so-called ‘papaya rules’ are here to stay for the 2026 season. This policy, which emphasizes a level playing field between Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri, has been instrumental in their success, leading McLaren to their first drivers’ and constructors’ title double since 1998—a remarkable feat accomplished with six races still left in the season. Brown’s announcement solidifies the team’s commitment to fairness, even when both drivers were in contention for top points.

Meanwhile, rising star Isack Hadjar, who recently signed with Red Bull, is bracing himself for the formidable challenge of teaming up with the reigning champion, Max Verstappen, in 2026. Hadjar, who has showcased his talent during an impressive rookie season, recognizes that admitting Verstappen’s superior speed will be essential for his survival at the iconic team. He joins a prestigious list of drivers who have partnered with Verstappen, including legends like Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez.

Adding to the intrigue, Liam Lawson, who has secured his position with the Racing Bulls for 2026, expressed relief at being retained after a rocky start last season. Lawson’s journey has been anything but smooth, having been demoted just two races into the 2025 season. However, with a newfound sense of stability, he is set to team up with Arvid Lindblad, bringing fresh hope to the squad.

As if the evening couldn’t get more electrifying, Max Verstappen sent a heartfelt video message to Norris and the McLaren team, offering his “big congratulations” during the gala. This gesture comes after the four-time world champion was forced to skip the event due to illness, a decision made on the advice of his doctors. His absence only underscores the intensity of the current F1 landscape, where rivalries and camaraderie collide in spectacular fashion.

The world of Formula 1 is abuzz with this latest news, as fans and teams alike brace for an exhilarating season ahead. With key rule changes on the horizon for the 2026 season, the stakes have never been higher, and every driver is gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling ride on the F1 circuit.
