Lando Norris defies expectations after championship win: why he’s still just Lando

Title: Lando Norris Stays Grounded After Championship Glory: “He’s Not Superman!”

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, the stakes have never been higher, and the tension more palpable, as Oscar Piastri declares that despite Lando Norris clinching his first world championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, their dynamic remains firmly intact. “He’s not become Superman,” Piastri states, emphasizing that while Norris has taken the crown, he’s still the same teammate he has always known.

The McLaren duo has battled fiercely for the 2025 title, with Norris emerging victoriously at the season finale, finishing third behind Piastri and race winner Max Verstappen. The nail-biting competition meant Norris edged out Verstappen by a mere two points, with Piastri trailing by 11. This championship clash has been a far cry from the infamous rivalries of McLaren’s past, notably the bitter battles between legends Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

When questioned about the potential shift in their relationship following Norris’s triumph, Piastri remained resolute: “No, I don’t think so. I don’t think that will change anything. He’s obviously had a great season and is a deserving champion, but he’s still Lando.” This assertion highlights the mutual respect and camaraderie that has flourished between the two drivers, a refreshing departure from the cutthroat rivalries that have marred F1 history.

The McLaren team has expertly managed the fine line between competition and collaboration, ensuring fairness as both drivers pursued glory. This approach starkly contrasts the traditional hierarchy of appointing a clear number one and number two driver. A prime example of this occurred at Monza, where Piastri was instructed to relinquish his position back to Norris following a pit stop delay, proving that teamwork was prioritized over individual ambition.

Piastri reflects on this unique environment, stating, “It’s a testament to the way we go racing. It’s not easy fighting for two championships, but we knew this challenge was coming.” The duo’s ability to comply with team orders and navigate moments of tension without major fallout is indicative of their professional maturity, reminiscent of the explosive clashes seen between former teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Acknowledging the intensity of their rivalry, Piastri notes, “Yes, there’s difficult moments and tension at times, but I think both Lando and I have become better drivers from pushing each other to the limit.” This self-awareness underscores their commitment to personal and professional growth, even amidst the pressure cooker of high-stakes racing.

As they look ahead to the future, both drivers are keen to refine their strategies, with Piastri hinting at discussions during the off-season to ensure they can continue to compete fairly. “At the end of the day, they gave us both as good of a chance as the team could have to fairly fight for a world championship, and that’s all you can ask for,” he stated, reinforcing the ethos of teamwork that has underpinned their successful campaign.

In a season filled with unexpected twists and thrilling rivalries, the McLaren team has carved a new path in the world of Formula 1, proving that camaraderie and competition can coexist. As Lando Norris celebrates his championship, one thing is clear: he may be a world champion, but he remains grounded, and Oscar Piastri is right there with him, ready for the next challenge.
