Lando Norris Shakes F1 Landscape: “Ferrari Clearly Has the Best Car”
In a shocking revelation following the season opener in Melbourne, Lando Norris has thrown down the gauntlet by declaring that Ferrari might just have the upper hand in the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite Mercedes' dazzling victory, which saw George Russell take a commanding win and a one-two finish for the team, Norris is raising eyebrows with his bold assertion that the SF-26’s performance, especially in cornering, is unparalleled.
As the dust settles on the Australian Grand Prix, which ended with Mercedes clearly leading the pack, Norris’s words echo loudly: “From what we can see, Ferrari clearly has the best car. The cornering speeds are impressive.” His analysis paints a vivid picture of a fierce competition brewing just beneath the surface—a competition that could redefine the season.
However, it wasn’t all smiles for Norris, who finished a staggering 52 seconds behind winner Russell and 36 seconds adrift of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. This glaring gap reveals a sobering truth: McLaren has a mountain to climb if they want to compete at the sharp end of the grid. “We are clearly far from where we need to be, especially in terms of the car,” Norris lamented. “This race showed that we are very far off—very, very far off—and we have a lot of work ahead of us. It’s not something that will change overnight or in a week or two.”
The Australian race served as a wake-up call for the McLaren team, which Norris believes is not only trailing Ferrari but also falling behind Red Bull. Norris highlighted Max Verstappen's impressive drive from the back of the grid, rapidly challenging for a top-five position, a clear indicator that the Red Bull is also a formidable competitor this season.
Norris elaborated on the performance chasm, stating, “I’m not sure what the exact difference was, maybe around 50 seconds. We’re practically one second per lap slower—I'd say at least five to six tenths per lap. Part of it is still understanding the power unit, but part of it is just having a better car. It was clear that Red Bull was much faster because Max started from the back and nearly passed us.”
Despite the disappointing results, Norris remains optimistic about McLaren's journey ahead. He emphasizes the importance of using the early season to better understand their vehicle and set the stage for the rest of the championship. “Right now, matching that level is impossible for us. We have to work hard to understand things and learn as much as possible during this phase of the season because what we do now will influence the rest of the year. It seems like it will be a long, challenging season, but I was pleased with our fifth-place finish,” he concluded.
As the Formula 1 circus moves forward, the stakes have never been higher. With Ferrari seemingly leading the charge and McLaren grappling to keep pace, fans can expect an exhilarating season filled with drama, fierce rivalries, and unexpected twists. Will Norris and McLaren rise to the occasion, or will Ferrari and Mercedes dictate the narrative? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the battle for supremacy in F1 2026 is just heating up!
