Formula 1 superstar Lando Norris has not ruled out the possibility of following in the tyre tracks of fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton by making a move from McLaren to Italian racing heavyweights Ferrari. Norris, who has his sights firmly set on his first F1 Drivers’ title, played a key role in breaking McLaren’s 26-year Constructors’ Championship drought last year.
The 25-year-old racing prodigy has been with McLaren since his debut in the high-octane world of Formula 1 in 2019. Despite renewing his contract with the team until 2024, Norris has not dismissed the idea of donning the crimson uniform of Ferrari in the future.
Hamilton’s unexpected move to the Maranello-based Ferrari team in 2025 after a long-standing 12-season partnership with Mercedes has sparked speculation about potential similar moves from other drivers. If Norris ever decides to part ways with McLaren, the iconic Ferrari is the only team he envisions himself joining.
In an interview with US broadcaster NBC News, Norris stated, “I know exactly which [team] I would love to go to – it’s the team that everyone wants to be part of at some point in their career – but I’m very content with McLaren.”
The allure of Ferrari is undeniable in the motor racing world, a sentiment echoed by Formula 1 legend Sebastian Vettel: “Everyone is a Ferrari fan.” Despite this, Norris maintains that he is eagerly looking forward to his future with McLaren, the team that introduced him to Formula 1.
Norris expressed his commitment to McLaren, stating, “They’ve ushered me into Formula 1, and I’ve practically spent my entire career here. I envision myself racing for them for many more years.”
For Norris, any potential move to Ferrari would require an extended wait, considering Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are both locked into multi-year contracts with the Scuderia.
Norris voiced his support for Hamilton’s decision to switch to Ferrari, acknowledging that he would likely have made a similar decision were he in Hamilton’s shoes. Hamilton is the first British driver to race for Ferrari since Eddie Irvine in 1999, and he will be aiming to join the likes of Mike Hawthorn and John Surtees as English F1 champions in Ferrari red.
Norris spoke on ITV’s This Morning about Hamilton’s move, saying: “It’s a cool narrative for him to head to Ferrari after everything he’s achieved. It’s an exciting next step. Many have questioned its wisdom, but I would probably do the same if I was in his position. It’s a fantastic story for him. He’s going there with a fresh mindset, ready to prove he still possesses the same Lewis Hamilton magic that he’s demonstrated for many years. We’ll just have to wait and see how it unfolds.”
Ahead of his first Grand Prix for Ferrari, Hamilton confessed to the BBC, “I’m still pinching myself. Next week, when I start a Grand Prix in red – wow, I can’t express just how thrilled I am.”
While the future remains uncertain, Norris’s openness to making a Hamilton-esque move to Ferrari adds another intriguing layer to the high-stakes world of Formula 1. As the engines rev and the lights go green, fans will be watching closely to see how these narratives unfold on the asphalt.
