Lando Norris acredita que a McLaren tinha potencial para terminar à frente de Leclerc na Austrália.

The McLaren driver in Formula 1, Lando Norris, is confident that he had enough speed to overtake Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and secure second place in the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. Norris took advantage of Leclerc’s decision to abandon his final qualifying lap, allowing him to start ahead of the Monegasque driver. He held onto his third position in the early stages of the race.

When Max Verstappen retired due to a stuck right rear brake, Norris moved up to second place. However, McLaren chose to put his teammate Oscar Piastri ahead of Norris on lap 9. This resulted in Leclerc and Piastri returning to the race ahead of Norris when he made his pit stop five laps later. McLaren then instructed the drivers to swap positions during the second part of the race.

Despite his efforts, Norris was unable to catch Leclerc and prevent Ferrari from achieving an impressive one-two finish. He had to settle for McLaren’s first podium at Albert Park since 2014. When asked if McLaren’s performance in Australia was unexpected, Norris replied that their pace was strong throughout the weekend. He highlighted his impressive performance in the long runs and with a full tank on Friday.

Although Norris acknowledges that Carlos Sainz, the race winner, was unbeatable for McLaren, he believes he had the speed to challenge Leclerc and secure a place on the podium. He expressed that they had the chance to claim second place but missed the opportunity. However, Norris sees this as a positive sign for the team and a morale boost. He is pleased to be back on the podium and hopes that their good pace continues in the upcoming races.

The McLaren mechanics were positioned in the pit area, ready to perform maintenance on one of their two vehicles on lap 34. However, they quickly retreated when Ferrari decided to bring Leclerc in for a second pit stop.

Norris revealed that McLaren intended to use the undercut strategy on Leclerc. However, due to Ferrari’s decision, McLaren had to change their plans and extend Norris’ time on the track by six more laps.

When asked what McLaren could have done to overtake Leclerc, Norris replied: “We left no stone unturned.” Unfortunately, their planned undercut lap coincided with Leclerc’s pit stop, forcing McLaren to adopt a different strategy.

“I got close in the second part of the race. I was right on his rear. If I had pitted, I believe I would have been able to undercut him. But he pitted first, so I lost that opportunity,” explained Norris.

We can’t help but wonder what would have happened if they had executed the undercut one lap earlier. However, making decisions in a matter of seconds is challenging, and there are always potential consequences. It’s easy for things to go wrong.

Despite the circumstances, McLaren still put in an admirable performance. Securing third and fourth place as a team is a positive result and earned them a substantial number of points.

However, it is evident that Ferrari outperformed McLaren. Currently, Ferrari has a superior car. Norris acknowledges this and recognizes that McLaren must strive harder to match the performance of their rivals.
