McLaren has sent a clear message to the Formula 1 grid—they’re not here to compete; they’re here to dominate. With the unveiling of the MCL39, draped in a striking camouflage livery, the Woking-based team is openly embracing its title ambitions. While rivals stay quiet about their developments, McLaren’s confidence is undeniable—and for good reason.
After a resurgent 2024 season, where Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri combined for six Grand Prix victories, McLaren has stepped into 2025 as one of the strongest contenders for the championship. Both drivers, having learned from their battles with Max Verstappen and Red Bull, are more determined than ever to challenge for the sport’s ultimate prize.
Norris Admits Past Shortcomings, Ready to Take on Verstappen
Lando Norris knows exactly where he fell short last season. Despite winning in Miami, Zandvoort, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi, his early-season deficit proved too much to overcome against Verstappen.
“With how he [Verstappen] drives and the risks that he takes and the aggressiveness that he has, there was almost no way that I could come back from the deficit that I had,” Norris admitted at the MCL39 launch.
His biggest takeaway? Starting strong is non-negotiable.
“It changes the mentality of every driver. It would be a different mentality for Max if he’s 50 points behind versus 50 points ahead. That’s the biggest key difference.”
Norris also acknowledged his racecraft needed improvement. A costly defensive mistake against Verstappen in Texas exposed areas where he had to refine his approach.
“I know I wasn’t at the level I needed to be when I first went into those battles with Max – that was clear,” he continued. “It hurts, but as long as I learn and don’t repeat those mistakes, I’ll be in a better position.”
Piastri Declares: “I Can Be World Champion This Year”
While Norris is refining his game, Oscar Piastri has no interest in playing second fiddle. After a breakout 2023 season and his first two Grand Prix wins in 2024 (Hungary and Baku), the Australian is eyeing the biggest prize in motorsport.
“I do think that I can become world champion this year,” Piastri confidently stated. “Last year, I identified weaknesses that I’ve since worked on. Now, it’s about delivering every weekend and making sure I put my best foot forward.”
For Piastri, **qualifying is the key
