Lancia Makes a Thunderous Comeback: Wins WRC2 in Croatia After 33-Year Hiatus!

In an exhilarating display of speed and skill, Lancia has stormed back into the spotlight, clinching its first WRC2 victory in Croatia—an “exceptional result” marking its triumphant return to the World Rally Championship after an eye-watering absence of 33 years. The legendary Italian automaker, renowned for its astounding record of 10 WRC manufacturers’ titles, is finally back in the game, and this comeback is nothing short of spectacular.

After a rocky start at the Monte Carlo Rally in January, where both of Lancia's Ypsilon Rally2 cars, driven by Yohan Rossel and Nikolay Gryazin, faced early crashes, the team has risen like a phoenix from the ashes in Croatia. Rossel showcased his undeniable talent and the remarkable capabilities of the Ypsilon HF Integrale, finishing fourth overall, and more importantly, leading the charge to a thrilling WRC2 victory.

Against challenging road conditions, Rossel delivered a flawless performance, securing Lancia's best result since Alex Fiorio's fourth place at the 1994 Acropolis Rally. The last time Lancia celebrated any victory in the WRC was back in 1992, when Andrea Aghini triumphed at Rally Sanremo. This new triumph signals a promising resurgence for a brand that has long been a staple of rally greatness.

The day's excitement didn’t end there. Nikolay Gryazin bounced back from a minor setback involving a loose turbo boost pipe to clinch a well-deserved third place in WRC2. Didier Clement, Lancia Corse team principal, couldn't contain his enthusiasm, stating, “Following an extremely encouraging Monte Carlo Rally, both drivers managed to navigate the pitfalls to achieve an exceptional result.” He lauded the performance of Rossel and Gryazin, noting that a one-two finish was within reach, highlighting the reliability and speed of the Ypsilon HF Integrale.

Rossel himself echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the historic nature of his victory. “It’s been a fantastic rally for us and for the team,” he declared. “After Monte Carlo, it was a bit difficult for me, but here in Croatia, everything was perfect.” This victory not only marks a significant milestone for Lancia but also places Rossel among the elite drivers who have contributed to the brand’s storied legacy.

With the Canary Islands Rally just around the corner, there is palpable excitement surrounding Lancia's prospects. Rossel emphasized the dedication of the Stellantis Group in transforming the Ypsilon into a formidable WRC2 competitor in record time. “In a short time, everyone has pushed a lot to be ready. The plan is to stay focused and keep pushing behind the steering wheel,” he stated, revealing the team’s relentless ambition.

As Lancia prepares to tackle the upcoming events, this victory serves as a clarion call to fans and competitors alike—the iconic brand is back, and it's ready to reclaim its rightful place in the annals of rallying history! The roar of engines and the thrill of the race are back, and Lancia's comeback story is just beginning. Buckle up, rally enthusiasts; the best is yet to come!
