The myth of Senna and, tragically, his death are widely known to fans who experienced those unforgettable years of Formula 1. His achievements happened decades before the era of social media amplifying everything and, therefore, received relatively less attention compared to the immense exposure that athletes and F1 drivers receive in this modern era of the internet and digital technology.
However, the tribute in Imola during the recent Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix weekend served as a catalyst to reignite his legacy among the new audience that F1 has attracted. This is true not only since Senna’s death, but also in the current boom of modern F1. The three days in Italy generated significant exposure that undoubtedly resonated with the emotions of the contemporary generation of devoted F1 enthusiasts.
This view is shared by Ayrton’s nieces, Bianca and Lallali Senna, who serve as CEO of the Senna brands and Lalalli Studios, respectively…
The anger, pain, and devastation that we all experienced persisted for months and still linger on occasions like the 30th anniversary of that tragic weekend in Imola. Last weekend, memories came rushing back as the sport came together to honor its fallen heroes.
The emotions throughout all indicate that the pain never truly disappears. And if this is true for us, spectators, for the media, and for the fans, how much more intense must it be for the Senna family? Their grief is a constant presence, perhaps eased by the remarkable work of the Senna Foundation, established in his honor and overseen by Ayrton’s sister, Viviane Senna.
Viviane was not present at this event, as she is taking care of her elderly mother. However, Senna’s nieces, Bianca and Lallali Senna, attended as ambassadors of the Senna Foundation, representing the family.
The sisters were visibly emotional and impressed by the wave of love for their uncle. Despite the lump in our throats and the crowds full of emotion and respect for our fallen hero, they generously shared their thoughts.
To start, I asked about their mother’s well-being, to which Lalalli revealed: “Viviane is fine. Our mother takes care of her own mother in Portugal. Our grandmother is now 88 years old.”
Regarding the name ‘Ayrton Senna’, three decades later, Lalalli commented: “It’s a crucial moment. When discussing the legacy 5 years, 10 years ago, or even 20 years ago, we were still mainly focused on the past. Now, with 30 years having passed, it represents a change and a turning point.
“We still acknowledge the past, but we also look towards the future. Ayrton has become deeply rooted in the hearts of the youth, in the new generation. For us, this is a turning point,” Lalalli ventured.
Bianca expressed mixed emotions about celebrating Ayrton Senna’s legacy. She acknowledged the tragedy and deep loss that was felt, but also felt a sense of pride and gratitude. Senna’s importance goes beyond his racing results and serves as a symbol for people of all generations. His story of pursuing dreams and never giving up resonates with everyone, even if it’s not always the easiest path. Bianca believes that Senna’s story will endure and has turned the tragedy into an opportunity to inspire future generations in Brazil through education and providing opportunities. She is confident that Senna would be proud of these efforts.
Lalalli shared that initially there was concern within the family that Senna’s memory would fade over time. However, they soon realized that Senna was not only famous, but deeply loved, which elevated his legacy to a completely different level. Lalalli emphasized the importance of keeping Senna’s memory alive, as it not only inspires success, but also embodies important human values. Bianca’s work in developing the Senna brand has been essential in showcasing everything that has been done in honor of Senna. This holds great significance for the family.
The tributes to Senna witnessed in Imola this year will continue in Monte Carlo, where Senna remains the King of Monaco in the world of Formula 1. McLaren has designed a special livery for this weekend, paying homage to Senna’s iconic yellow helmet. Lalalli and the Senna family greatly appreciate these gestures, as they believe it is crucial to touch people’s hearts and keep Senna’s memory alive.
Bianca concluded by stating that Ayrton Senna represents the hero that resides within each person. He always chose the difficult path, emphasizing that success is never easy and requires perseverance and determination.
