Juan Pablo Montoya’s unforgettable crash during the 2012 Daytona 500 remains etched in the annals of NASCAR history. A former Formula 1 and IndyCar driver, Montoya was running among the top 10 when his No. 42 Chevrolet spiraled out of control during a caution period. The result was a catastrophic collision with a jet dryer stationed on the track, leading to a dramatic explosion that caused a race delay of over two hours. Montoya’s chilling recollection of the event underscores the severity of the incident, acknowledging the painful impact he had braced for upon collision. Fortunately, both Montoya and the jet dryer operator, Duane Barnes, escaped the incident unscathed, prompting immediate safety reforms in NASCAR. All jet dryer drivers are now required to don fire suits and helmets, a rule that continues to be enforced today.

Fast forward to more than a decade later, NASCAR fans found themselves on the edge of their seats with a near-repeat of the infamous Montoya crash. This time, the spotlight was on Kyle Larson at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The sight of a top driver crashing into safety equipment during a crucial race moment rekindled memories of Montoya’s notorious wreck.

As the NASCAR caravan pulled into the Eastern Coast for the next round, Homestead-Miami prepared to host the Straight Talk Wireless 400. Amid the anticipation for NASCAR’s grand spring return in Miami, fans still vividly remembered the peculiar 2023 incident.

Despite already securing his spot in the Championship 4 race, the 2021 Cup series champion, Kyle Larson, found himself in a precarious situation at the 4EVER 400. Larson was neck and neck with Ryan Blaney for the lead when they both entered the pit road during a caution. Misjudging Blaney’s slowing pace, Larson collided with Blaney’s rear bumper before slamming into the sand barrels lining the pit lane divider. The aftermath of the crash saw sand scattered across the track and Larson’s race hopes dashed as his Hendrick Motorsports team had to retire him from the race.

This was not Larson’s first mishap under caution. In 2015, Larson had a similar incident with Kyle Busch at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In this case, Larson’s late decision to enter pit road led to a collision with Busch, causing damage to both cars and effectively ending their races. Despite the setback, Busch went on to win his first Cup title later that year.

Fast-forward to the present, Larson is on the verge of making history at the 2025 Straight Talk Wireless 400 at Homestead-Miami. Despite his previous crash at Homestead in 2023, Larson has proven himself to be a formidable competitor at the track. This weekend, Larson will participate in all three national series races with the goal of achieving a triple victory. A win in the remaining two races at Homestead— Xfinity, and Cup— would place Larson alongside Kyle Busch as the only driver to accomplish this feat. Busch achieved the triple-win weekend twice, in 2010 and 2017 at Bristol. Larson’s skill set and current momentum make him a strong contender for the title, but as history has shown, Homestead can be a challenging track, especially for the HMS driver looking to level up with Rowdy Busch.

In the midst of all these, Larson remains unfazed. His victory in the Truck Series Baptist Health 200 demonstrates his resilience and ability to bounce back. Despite starting from the top of the grid, Larson had to fight for the win. A late race spin placed him outside the top 20, but the HMS driver managed to pull off a stunning comeback, passing Layne Riggs with just two laps remaining to snatch the win. This victory, his fourth in just 16 Truck Series starts, underscores his ability to overcome setbacks, setting the stage for an exciting race weekend at Homestead-Miami.
