Kyle Larson, a key player in the motorsport world, is gearing up to etch his name in the annals of motorsport history once again. The veteran Hendrick Motorsports driver is adamant about achieving the iconic “double” feat, a grueling 1,100-mile driving challenge, despite having faced adverse weather conditions that foiled his attempts last year.
The 32-year-old Californian racer is undeterred by the past. In fact, he views the upcoming endeavor on May 25th as an opportunity to rewrite history. Previous year’s unfortunate weather conditions at the Coca-Cola 600 and a premature conclusion to the crown jewel event, stripped him of a chance to compete and forced him to seek a waiver for the playoffs. Yet, Larson is willing to brave the storm once again, literally and figuratively, to secure his place amongst a select few who have conquered this feat.
In his pursuit of motorsport immortality, Larson is leaving no room for error. He has chalked out an extensive preparation plan, which includes a return to IndyCar for testing in late April, and familiarizing himself with open-wheel racing in the weeks leading up to Indianapolis 500. The racer had finished 18th in the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ last year, a result he hopes to better this time around.
Speaking about his ambitious plan, Larson revealed, “I really want to do it again because I didn’t technically get to do it. I want to do the double, what it would be like to run 1,100 miles.” The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion will be partnering with Arrow McLaren, raising the stakes and expectations for his performance in the upcoming event.
In 2024, Larson had to make a tough call when the Indianapolis 500 was delayed due to bad weather. He chose to complete the IndyCar event after consulting with Rick Hendrick, but the weather once again played spoiler, preventing him from competing in the Coca-Cola 600. This cost him valuable points and possibly a regular series championship. However, Larson is approaching things differently this time, ensuring that his participation in the Coca-Cola 600 is not jeopardized under any circumstances.
His determination, passion, and commitment have earned him the admiration of McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown. The prospect of Larson attempting ‘the double’ has Brown excited. In a press release, he said, “There’s no doubt we’re counting down the days until the Indy 500, where we’ll be racing once again with Kyle Larson… We’re working hard together to get Kyle in a position to complete all 1,100 miles on May 25 in Indy and Charlotte, and just maybe win at both.”
Despite the potential risk of bad weather and NASCAR’s stricter waiver policy, Larson is unfazed. He believes that the waiver policy will have a greater impact on those suspended for on-track misconduct rather than a weather delay at Indianapolis. Although competing in ‘the double’ is a risky endeavor in itself, Larson is hopeful that circumstances will align in his favor, enabling him to realize his lifelong ambition.
In his quest for motorsport immortality, Kyle Larson is prepared to face any and all challenges. He stands ready to risk the entire 2025 NASCAR season, proving that for true champions, the journey is as significant as the destination itself.
