Kyle Larson Wants Carl Edwards to Replace Him in the No. 5 Hendrick Chevrolet at Charlotte

As Kyle Larson gears up for another Indy 500 attempt in 2025, the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevy will need a substitute driver at Charlotte’s Coca-Cola 600 practice and qualifying. And Larson has a bold suggestion for who should fill his seat—none other than NASCAR legend Carl Edwards.

In a recent interview ahead of The Clash at Bowman Gray, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion revealed that he has personally pitched the idea to Jeff Gordon and crew chief Cliff Daniels, though the discussion hasn’t gone beyond that—yet.

Larson’s Dream Replacement: “Carl, We Want You!”

Larson didn’t hold back on his admiration for the former Joe Gibbs Racing star:

“I’ve not talked to him, and Bob, you can blow this out there. He’s probably not going to see it anyway, but I would love to have Carl Edwards do it. I think it would be great. That’s my pick this year.”

If Hendrick Motorsports can convince Edwards to step in, it would be one of the biggest storylines of the season. Edwards, a 28-time Cup Series winner, walked away from NASCAR in 2016, stunning the motorsports world. A comeback, even for just a race weekend, would send shockwaves through the sport.

Larson even issued a direct plea to Edwards:

“It’s not anything serious right now, but that’s who I would pick. I think that would make a huge splash in the sport and be great. Carl, if you happen to see this, please jump in the 5 car. We want you.”

Could Carl Edwards Really Return?

While Edwards has stayed away from NASCAR since his sudden exit, he never officially ruled out a return. Over the years, he has been linked to one-off races, but nothing has materialized.

Larson’s request is similar to how Kevin Harvick filled in for him last season—a move that drew massive fan attention. If Edwards agrees, it would be one of the most anticipated guest drives in modern NASCAR history.

Kevin Harvick Predicts a Heated Larson-Bell Rivalry in 2025

While Larson was dreaming up his ideal replacement driver, Kevin Harvick had another spicy take on his 2025 season—one that could define the Cup Series title fight.

On the Happy Hour Podcast, Harvick predicted that the intensity between Larson and Christopher Bell will explode in 2025, after recent duels in the Chili Bowl.

“I think the Larson-Bell rivalry is something that we all hope for, but it has a lot more opportunity to be in more places than just NASCAR, right? Like the Chili Bowl already had that…We’ve seen it in the past a little bit. Um, but you know, I think that, that rivalry spices up because we see it in more places than just on the NASCAR track.”

Both Larson and Bell have been consistent frontrunners in the Next-Gen era, with their dirt-racing roots fueling an already fierce competition.

As 2025 unfolds, all eyes will be on:
🔥 Will Carl Edwards actually step into the No. 5 Chevrolet?
🔥 Will Larson and Bell’s rivalry boil over into full-blown Cup Series drama?

With Larson’s double-duty schedule, Bell’s rise, and NASCAR’s return to Bowman Gray, the season is shaping up to be a thriller.
