Kyle Larson Champions Expanding NASCAR Podium Celebrations Beyond Mexico City

NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson drives during practice for the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Saturday, May 31, 2025.

In a groundbreaking move, NASCAR superstar Kyle Larson challenges the status quo of podium celebrations, advocating for a new era of recognition for top finishers beyond the borders of Mexico. Larson’s bold stance comes as the motorsport giant gears up for its first points-paying international Cup Series race in the 21st century in Mexico City.

Larson, a driving force for Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that NASCAR should embrace global motorsports customs by introducing podium celebrations for the top three drivers, a practice common in Formula One and other racing series around the world. The 32-year-old acknowledges the importance of honoring not just the race winner but also the second and third-place finishers, emphasizing the value of celebrating their achievements for themselves, their teams, and their sponsors.

While Larson advocates for embracing international norms, he also stresses the significance of maintaining NASCAR’s unique identity amidst any potential changes. Drawing from his experience in dirt racing, where podium celebrations are a nightly ritual, Larson proposes incorporating elements from other motorsports while infusing NASCAR’s distinctive flair.

Fellow Cup driver Ross Chastain echoes Larson’s sentiments, highlighting the challenge of accommodating multiple drivers on a podium but underscoring the importance of recognizing the entire top three. Larson commends NASCAR’s past experimentation with podium ceremonies, citing the success of events like the L.A. Clash, and calls for expanding such celebrations to different race locations.

As NASCAR navigates the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, Larson’s advocacy for inclusive podium celebrations heralds a new chapter in the sport’s history. With drivers like Larson at the forefront of pushing boundaries, NASCAR stands poised to revolutionize its post-race rituals while honoring its rich heritage.

Stay tuned as NASCAR embarks on a transformative journey towards redefining victory celebrations and embracing a more global perspective in the world of motorsports.
