Kyle Larson Breaks Personal Records at Atlanta Motor Speedway: A Night of Firsts

Kyle Larson No.5 drives out of the garage and heads for the last NASCAR Cup Series practice on Saturday, Feb.15,2025.

Kyle Larson, the acclaimed race car driver, achieved three career milestones at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday night. Displaying unparalleled prowess, Larson emerged victorious in the second stage, marking this as his first triumph on a drafting-style circuit.

Previously, Larson had been plagued by a series of unfortunate events at Atlanta, where he failed to complete five out of his last six races, after the track’s transformation into a drafting circuit. In a remarkable turnaround, Larson led the race on Sunday night as the white flag was raised.

Larson’s third achievement comprised of securing a third-place finish, an unprecedented feat for him at Atlanta Motor Speedway in its current layout. This accomplishment was met with both relief and jubilation by the driver.

According to Larson, “It feels incredible. The joy would have been even greater had we won, but managing to complete the race and make it to the third stage feels rewarding. The competition was fierce and entertaining. We were in contention again, as usual, and we crossed the finish line.”

In the race’s final moments, Larson found himself in a thrilling side-by-side duel with Christopher Bell, who was on his outside as they entered Turn 1. In Turn 3, the competition intensified as Carson Hocevar inserted himself in the middle, putting Larson in a three-way battle. Despite the high-stakes situation, Larson kept his cool and secured a third place finish.

Reflecting on his strategy, Larson noted, “If I had stayed in the top lane, Bell might not have been able to overtake me. He would have probably just pushed me clear and got to the bottom inside of me. I’ll need to analyze this further and view it from different perspectives.”

Larson’s commendable performance at Atlanta comes on the heels of his disappointment at the Daytona 500 a week prior. Despite his 22 starts at Daytona, Larson has yet to secure a top-five finish. His record at Talladega Superspeedway is marginally better, with two top-five finishes in 20 starts.

Jeff Gordon, the renowned race car driver, remarked that Larson’s struggle seemed to be getting to him. But Larson defended his performance at Atlanta, stating that it is a “totally different” facility compared to Daytona and Talladega.

Larson acknowledged, “I wouldn’t say this boosts my confidence. However, I do feel a bit more confident when racing here. It’s not just about luck but also about handling. At Daytona, it was more about luck. But here, I feel I make the right decision 50% of the time.”

Despite the challenges, Larson believes that a driver’s ability to control their movements significantly contributes to their success. He stated, “All of us are in more control here. So, it’s more fun. Daytona and Talladega, on the other hand, are tough.”

With these new achievements under his belt, Larson continues to demonstrate his tenacity and skill on the racetrack, promising even more thrilling performances in the future.
