Kurt Busch is set to make his highly anticipated return to racing at the Race of Champions (ROC) on March 7-8, marking his first competitive appearance since retiring from the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023. The 2004 Cup Series champion will join a star-studded lineup at Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia, competing alongside motorsport legends from across the globe.

A Long-Awaited Comeback

Busch stepped away from NASCAR after a career-ending crash at Pocono in July 2022, officially announcing his retirement the following year. Now medically cleared to compete, Busch is ready to showcase his skills at the ROC, an event he describes as an “honor.”

“Race car drivers always push the limits to be the best, and drive to win,” Busch said. “To receive another invite from Race Of Champions is a chance to go up against the best of the best from around the world. What an honor!”

ROC History and Team USA

Busch is no stranger to the Race of Champions, having competed in 2014 and 2017:

  • 2014 (Barbados): Represented Team USA with Ryan Hunter-Reay, advancing to the group stage in the Nations Cup and excelling in the individual competition before losing to Australian racing icon Jamie Whincup.
  • 2017 (Miami): Partnered with brother Kyle Busch, earning second place in the Nations Cup before bowing out in the individual group stage.

This year, Busch will team up with Travis Pastrana for Team USA in the Nations Cup and participate in the individual head-to-head event.

Pastrana’s Praise

Pastrana, a motorsport icon in his own right, expressed excitement about partnering with Busch.

“There is no one I’ve seen at past Race Of Champions from America that’s been able to jump in the cars and perform like Kurt Busch,” Pastrana said. “We’re going to do everything we can to win ROC Sydney for the USA.”

Star-Studded Lineup

Busch will compete alongside some of motorsport’s greatest talents, including:

  • Sebastien Loeb (9-time World Rally Champion)
  • Sebastian Vettel (4-time Formula 1 World Champion)
  • Johan Kristofferson (7-time World Rallycross Champion)
  • Valtteri Bottas (10-time F1 race winner)
  • Mick Schumacher (2020 F2 champion and WEC driver)
  • Jamie Whincup (7-time Supercars champion)

Additional competitors include Petter and Oliver Solberg, Toby Price, and Will Brown, among others.

A Legacy Beyond NASCAR

Kurt Busch’s career accomplishments include:

  • 34 NASCAR Cup Series wins, including the 2017 Daytona 500
  • 2003 IROC Champion
  • 2010 NASCAR All-Star Race Winner
  • Indy 500 Rookie of the Year (2014)

What’s Next?

Busch’s return adds another layer of excitement to an already highly anticipated event. The Race of Champions Sydney promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill, with Busch aiming to leave his mark on the international motorsport stage once again.

With the support of Travis Pastrana and a packed lineup of world-class competitors, Team USA will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with. Fans worldwide are eager to see if Busch can translate his NASCAR success into ROC glory.
