Kris Meeke is back behind the wheel of a Toyota, as the five-time WRC winner has officially signed on to compete in the Portuguese Rally Championship with a GR Yaris Rally2.
The Northern Irishman’s switch from Hyundai to Toyota was confirmed during a press conference in Portugal, with Meeke set to test his new machine ahead of the season-opening Rali Serras de Fafe on March 7-8.
Meeke on the Switch: “Time for Something Different”
Meeke, who had been competing in a Hyundai for the past year and a half, acknowledged that his transition to Toyota was primarily influenced by his ties to the Caetano Group, which supports both brands.
“Both importers are part of the Caetano Group, so for me, it’s just a different car and some different overalls. I’ve been in the Hyundai for a year and a half, and now it’s time for something different.”
However, the move carries a deeper emotional weight, as Meeke admitted that his return to rallying was shaped by the tragic passing of his close friend Craig Breen.
“Honestly, this thing came about through horrific circumstances after Craig’s accident. I didn’t know whether to turn left or right, whether it was the right thing to do or not. I did it at the time, not knowing whether I wanted to go back competing, and I just loved it.”
Why the Portuguese Rally Series? Meeke Praises the Championship’s Prestige
Meeke’s return to the Portuguese national rally scene is no coincidence—he dominated the competition last season, winning five of the eight rounds.
The veteran driver is thrilled to continue competing at a high level, especially in a series he considers one of the best in the world.
“To still be at this stage of my career doing something I love is mega. It’s a good level—great cars, great teams, fantastic people and fans, and mega rallies.”
“The first four rallies of the championship are all on gravel, and the fourth is Rally Portugal. The three before that use roads that have been part of the World Rally Championship.”
When asked about the significance of the Portuguese Rally Series, Meeke couldn’t hide his admiration:
“Is it the best national championship in the world? I’m not sure I can think of a better one. These people just get it. They do it right, they do it proper. It’s just nice to be part of a championship that continues to promote rallying with people with a bit of backbone to support it.”
Scotsman Stuart Loudon Continues as Co-Driver
Meeke will be joined once again by Stuart Loudon, who will continue as his co-driver throughout the 2025 season.
With his experience, Toyota’s formidable Rally2 machinery, and a deep passion for the sport, Meeke looks set to make a serious title run in what he considers one of rallying’s premier national series.
