Nico Hulkenberg, the Haas driver, is set to make a move to Sauber/Audi in 2025. Ayao Komatsu, the Team Principal of Haas, believes that Hulkenberg has the potential to win races for Audi in Formula 1, as long as he is provided with a competitive car. Hulkenberg has decided to leave Haas at the end of this season in order to join Sauber, which is preparing to become a works Audi team when new regulations come into effect in 2026. He has signed a long-term contract with Sauber/Audi, hoping that this move will help him achieve success with the German brand’s support.

Hulkenberg, who has competed in 217 F1 races throughout his career, spanning two stints, has yet to secure his first podium finish in the top tier of motorsport. Despite Audi’s ambitions of challenging for championships in the future, Komatsu believes it would be premature to claim that Hulkenberg has the qualities of a title-winning driver. Komatsu stated that Hulkenberg needs to prove himself by consistently delivering strong performances and achieving podium finishes and victories before being considered a potential World Champion.

However, Komatsu, who has worked closely with Hulkenberg since his arrival at Haas last season, is confident that the experienced F1 driver has the ability to compete at the front of the grid. Komatsu believes that Hulkenberg is one of the top drivers in Formula 1 and, given the right car, he can certainly challenge for podiums and victories.

Hulkenberg has played a crucial role in Haas’ progress this season, contributing 22 of the team’s 25 points and helping them secure seventh place in the championship standings. Komatsu admitted that Haas will miss Hulkenberg’s services, as he has been a valuable asset to the team. Komatsu praised Hulkenberg for his honesty, clear communication, and his ability to motivate the team in the right direction. Komatsu expressed his genuine appreciation for working with Hulkenberg and stated that he will definitely be missed.

In the meantime, Hulkenberg will make his way back to a team owned by Sauber, which has faced significant challenges this season and is the only team on the grid that has failed to score a single point.

Nevertheless, the former Renault driver has no regrets about his decision, as he recognizes the effort being put forth behind the scenes to ensure the long-term success of the Audi venture.

“To be honest, I don’t believe so,” he responded.

“I don’t see any openings within the top four teams for me. My mind and consciousness are at ease and clear.

“Every team always makes promises and talks about grand plans. ‘We’re doing this, we’re doing that…,’ but it’s evident that Audi is a globally recognized and influential brand.

“I am aware of how seriously they are taking this endeavor, the investments they are making, and the steps they are taking to ensure competitiveness and triumph.

“Furthermore, I believe that the rule change in 2026 presents a fantastic opportunity for a new manufacturer to enter the sport.

“It’s essentially a fresh start, with new resources, manpower, budget, and the power of the brand.

“I genuinely view this as an exceptional opportunity and an exhilarating project for both myself and my career.”
