IndyCar held its second practice session in Long Beach early Saturday morning, providing all 27 drivers with the opportunity to make final preparations before the qualifying session later in the day.

Track conditions during the morning session were potentially not representative due to thick clouds and low temperatures. Nevertheless, many drivers spent a significant amount of time on the track during the 45-minute session, resulting in traffic issues as they simulated qualifying laps.

Kyle Kirkwood showcased his ability to navigate traffic effectively and set the fastest time of the day. He completed a lap on the 1.97-mile course in 1:06.4731, slightly faster than the fastest time achieved on Friday.

Colton Herta, Kirkwood’s teammate at Andretti, also performed well and secured the top spot on the charts with a lap time of 1:06.4886. However, his position was surpassed in the final minute of the practice.

Christian Lundgaard claimed the third position on the leaderboard, followed by Felix Rosenqvist, resulting in a session dominated by Honda, which was a significant shift from Friday’s practice.

Theo Pourchaire continued to impress in his first weekend in IndyCar, completing a lap just over a second behind the fastest drivers and finishing 19th in the morning session.

Turn 8 proved to be the most challenging section for the drivers, as the track was leveled and the inner curb was pushed back. This led the drivers to push harder in the high-speed corner to set up a good exit onto East Seaside Way.

Will Power faced difficulties at the beginning of the session when he oversteered and slid sideways, resulting in a broken suspension link against the concrete walls. This required extensive repair work in the pit area before he could resume his laps. Later in the session, Power lost control of his car again in turn 8, causing him to hit the nose of his Team Penske Chevrolet against the barriers and briefly trigger the red flag.

Power expressed frustration with his mistakes and stated that he would need to analyze the data to understand why his car was losing grip so late in his throttle application.

Another problematic corner was turn 9, which still had a large bump in the braking zone. This led several drivers to exceed the runoff area. Fortunately, all drivers were able to continue without the assistance of the safety team, and Power’s brief red flag was the only interruption in the session.

Santino Ferrucci faced challenges during the morning session, managing to complete only six laps before being forced to take his AJ Foyt Chevrolet behind the tire barriers due to an electrical issue on the main straight.

The next IndyCar event is a knockout qualifying session at 11:25 am Pacific time, which is expected to take place under sunny skies and higher track temperatures.
