Steve McQueen’s Legendary Shelby Cobra Hits the Auction Block!

The legendary Shelby Cobra, a true masterpiece of British and American engineering, is set to hit the auction block. But what sets this particular Cobra apart from the rest? It’s the fact that it was once owned and driven by none other than the King of Cool himself, Steve McQueen.

McQueen, known for his love of all things with an engine and wheels, had a special affinity for this car. Despite not officially owning it, he drove the Cobra for two years starting in 1965. The car, a Mark II with the serial number CSX2161, features a tubular steel chassis, original bodywork, and a powerful 289ci engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission.

Originally painted silver with a striking red interior, the Cobra sported the Class A Accessories package, which included chrome accents like an air cleaner, valve covers, bumper guards, and luggage racks. This was the condition in which McQueen enjoyed driving the car, while it was in the possession of Elmer Bernstein, the renowned composer and conductor.

After changing hands multiple times in the United States, the Cobra made its way back to Europe in 2003. It underwent a transformation, receiving a sleek black paint job, a roll bar, 15-inch Halibrand wheels, and a hood scoop. The suspension system features a sophisticated setup with a wishbone front and rear suspension, transverse leaf springs, and telescopic dampers. Girling hardware ensures exceptional stopping power.

For nearly two decades, the Cobra roamed the streets of the UK before returning to its homeland. Now, it is set to be auctioned off by Mecum, one of the most prestigious auction houses in the world. The highly sought-after 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra is expected to fetch a staggering price between $1.25 and $1.5 million.

While the car has accumulated over 17,000 miles (27,500 km) throughout its lifetime, it is the connection to Steve McQueen that truly makes it a collector’s dream. Keep an eye out for updates on this historic auction, as we eagerly await to see how the hammer falls.
