Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, has expressed high admiration for Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli’s exceptional drive during the recent Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix. Despite battling a damaged Mercedes W16, the young driver managed to secure a laudable sixth-place finish.

Starting eighth on the grid at Shanghai International Circuit, Antonelli crossed the finish line in the exact position he started, lagging 42 seconds behind team-mate George Russell who celebrated a third-place finish. However, post-race disqualifications for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton saw Antonelli uplifted to the sixth spot.

Although Antonelli’s performance did not steal the limelight, it was noteworthy, considering he was grappling with a hidden issue within the Mercedes W16 cockpit. Retrospectively, the young driver recalled a strange incident from the opening lap that might have caused the damage.

“I remember hitting Leclerc’s lost front wing end plate with the floor of my car,” Antonelli admitted, “At that time, I didn’t think it could have caused any damage. However, I later struggled with traction and power, which could be explained by the floor damage.”

Toto Wolff, noticing the extensive floor damage and the disappearance of titanium streaks, suspected that Antonelli might have run over Leclerc’s end-plate. The damage was so severe that it led to a loss of half a second per lap. Despite this setback, Antonelli’s performance did not waver, which greatly impressed Wolff.

“He showed tremendous maturity in handling a severely impaired vehicle, finishing eighth, and proceeding with his job without complaints. This shows the potential of this young man,” Wolff praised.

Although satisfied with his performance over two GP weekends, Antonelli is keen on improving. “The car’s pace is there, and I need to put things together for a better result,” he expressed. The driver is now looking forward to analyzing his performance and returning stronger for the upcoming race in Japan.

The Suzuka circuit will be a new challenge for the 18-year-old, but he is optimistic. “Every weekend is a massive learning experience. I am happy with my progress and am eager to improve, especially in qualifying. Achieving a clean lap and a forward starting position could change the entire race story,” Antonelli stated.

Antonelli’s mature and determined approach despite his debut mistake in Monza reflects his promising future in F1 racing. His admirable performance in the Chinese Grand Prix, despite the damaged Mercedes, has certainly caught the attention of the motorsport world.
