Kimi Antonelli sparks outrage over Lando Norris claim after explosive Qatar GP incident

Kimi Antonelli’s Controversial Qatar GP Gaffe: Did He Hand Lando Norris Victory on a Silver Platter?

In a dramatic twist of fate at the Qatar Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli has fervently declared that a single mistake cost him the chance to fend off Lando Norris, potentially altering the trajectory of the championship battle. Racing fiercely in fourth position on the penultimate lap, Antonelli succumbed to a costly error while navigating Turns 9 and 10, allowing the title-chasing Norris to snatch two crucial points from under his nose, finishing fourth instead of fifth.

This momentous slip-up has left the racing world in shock, as it handed Norris a 12-point lead over Max Verstappen heading into the high-stakes Abu Dhabi showdown, rather than a mere 10-point buffer. The aftermath of this incident has ignited a firestorm of accusations, with senior figures at Red Bull suggesting that Antonelli’s mistake was no accident, implying that he may have intentionally let Norris through. Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s race engineer, went as far as to claim that Antonelli “pulled over” to allow Norris to pass, while Helmut Marko hinted at a deliberate maneuver.

The fallout from this race has been intense, with Antonelli and the Mercedes team facing a staggering 1100% increase in online abuse, including shocking death threats. In response, Mercedes has taken a stand, pursuing action with the FIA, while Red Bull released a statement expressing regret over the harassment directed at the young rookie.

When confronted by RacingNews365, Antonelli was unequivocal about his ability to defend his position against Norris. “Yeah, definitely,” he asserted, clearly frustrated. “I was comfortable because he came with so much more pace, but then in the dirty air, he couldn’t get past, so I was pretty comfortable. He was even out of DRS for a couple of laps, so yeah, I felt like I could have held him off, but I just made a mistake.”

Reflecting on the intense battles he has faced against two championship contenders in recent races, including a fierce duel with Verstappen in Brazil for second place, Antonelli expressed his eagerness to continue his upward trajectory. “Overall, the second half of the season has been much stronger, and we’ve been fighting at the front more often, which is exciting,” he noted. “We’ve shown the pace, and I think in Vegas, we were super quick, and in Brazil we were able to hold on, so we can be happy, but there is a lot of room to improve and work on. I just need to keep the momentum, finish the year on a high, and then 2026 will start.”

As the Formula 1 community buzzes with speculation and outrage, Antonelli’s misstep has proven to be a pivotal moment in the championship race, raising questions about the integrity of the sport and leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this gripping saga. Will Antonelli bounce back, or will this controversy haunt him as the season wraps up? Only time will tell.
