Italian racing sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli, recently confirmed as Mercedes’ 2025 Formula 1 driver, has openly admitted he’s still struggling to handle the intense pressure that comes with being part of one of F1’s most successful teams. The 18-year-old prodigy, who has been under Mercedes’ wing since a young age, was officially named as Lewis Hamilton’s successor during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, a move that thrust him even further into the spotlight.
Antonelli expressed that while the faith Mercedes has shown in him has been crucial in helping him manage the high expectations, he’s still learning how to fully cope with the demands of F1. The Brackley-based team has been instrumental in guiding him, but Antonelli confessed he’s not always able to handle the pressure perfectly.
“I think one of the main factors [in dealing with pressure] is when you know you have a team like Mercedes around you that really believe in you, and they’ve been believing in me since a very young age,” Antonelli explained. “They really help you to cope with this pressure very well, and even though sometimes I still don’t cope with that perfectly.”
Antonelli’s recent debut FP1 session in Monza, where he crashed the Mercedes W15, showcased the immense weight on his shoulders. Despite the setback, the young driver remains determined to grow from the experience, acknowledging that filling Lewis Hamilton’s shoes is an insurmountable task.
“I think it’s not possible to replace Lewis Hamilton… So I don’t want to [be seen] as his replacement – I’m just the next driver for Mercedes in ’25, so I’m really excited for that.”
As Antonelli prepares for his rookie F1 season, the pressure will undoubtedly intensify, but Mercedes has already made it clear they expect some mistakes along the way. Despite the inevitable challenges, Antonelli is gearing up to carve his own path in the sport, with the weight of Mercedes’ legacy and the looming shadow of Hamilton’s success. The 2025 season promises to be a pivotal moment in his young career, and only time will tell how the Italian prodigy will handle the pressure in the top tier of motorsport.
