Kimi Antonelli Shatters Monza Jinx with Stellar P6 Qualifying Performance!

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a rising star in the world of Formula 1, turned what could have been a nerve-wracking experience into a triumphant qualifying session at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. Despite facing the ominous shadow of the notorious ‘Monza curse’, the 19-year-old driver secured a remarkable sixth-place starting position on the grid, a feat made possible by a five-place grid penalty imposed on Lewis Hamilton.

This impressive result comes after a tumultuous relationship with the famed Monza circuit, where Antonelli’s struggles began during his debut last year when he crashed at the perilous Parabolica corner. The pressure was palpable as he entered qualifying, especially after a challenging practice session that saw him stuck in the gravel, bringing out the red flags. But did he let the jitters hold him back? Absolutely not!

“I’m not going to lie, I felt very tense going into qualifying,” Antonelli candidly admitted. “After my mishap in FP2, I lost momentum. FP1 was strong, and I felt like I had good momentum, but then I went off early in FP2, which made me feel like I was starting from zero in FP3.”

Despite the setbacks, Antonelli displayed resilience and determination, ultimately turning the tide in his favor. “It was not easy, but I’m happy with how I built the run throughout the session,” he remarked, showcasing a maturity beyond his years.

Saturday marked a significant turnaround for the Mercedes driver, who managed to deliver a stellar performance that left fans buzzing. “Yeah, much happier,” he commented, reflecting on his recovery. “Finally, clean qualifying after a difficult period, so I’m quite happy. Just a shame for the last lap.”

The young driver faced initial struggles with tire temperatures, which caused him to fight for grip in the first part of the lap. “I had a lot of moments, especially with the rear,” he explained. However, his strong finish in the last sector gave him hope for the race ahead. “Hopefully the race pace is going to be good tomorrow, and we can put on a fight,” he added.

Mercedes’ technical director, James Allison, weighed in on Antonelli’s cautious approach, suggesting that the crash from last year still lingered in his mind. “The 2024 crash may have left him approaching race weekends with a degree of caution,” Allison noted. Yet, as Antonelli himself stated, the experience gained over the last 15 races has undoubtedly contributed to his newfound confidence. “I knew much better what to expect after Imola, so I felt much more at ease with everything,” he said.

The young driver also expressed gratitude for the electrifying support from the crowd. “I’ve been really trying to embrace the cheer from the crowd, which has been amazing,” he declared, building excitement for what’s to come.

So, has Andrea Kimi Antonelli finally vanquished the Monza curse? “Yeah, definitely,” he affirmed. “The last sector was almost powerful in the laps, so I’m really happy with that and definitely I overcame what happened in Parabolica last year.”

As the anticipation builds for the race, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see if Antonelli can convert his P6 start into a spectacular finish. One thing is for sure: this young talent is ready to make waves on the hallowed asphalt of Monza!
