Despite the persistent rumors suggesting a potential return to Formula 1, Kevin Magnussen has firmly dismissed these speculations as entirely unfounded. The Danish race car driver assured that he is thoroughly relishing his time in sports car racing and has no intentions of abandoning his newfound path.
Magnussen, who has carved out an impressive dual campaign in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with BMW, exudes a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that was largely missing during his stint in F1.
Magnussen, the progeny of sports car icon Jan Magnussen, stated in a conversation with RACER, “The rumor mill is constantly churning. It’s not unusual to find my name popping up in such speculations. However, I’m genuinely pleased with where I’m at now. The thrill of participating in these spectacular races, especially my main program in WEC, and the endurance races in IMSA, is unparalleled.”
The Hypercar category, which boasts of top-tier manufacturers and drivers, is attracting a lot of excitement. Magnussen views this as a renaissance period for sports car racing and is thrilled to be a part of it.
Having spent over a decade vying for wins in Formula 1, Magnussen’s current focus lies in seizing pole positions and victories. His No. 24 BMW M Team RLL M Hybrid V8 GTP car has already clinched the pole for the upcoming Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring race. He reminisces his F1 journey fondly, stating, “My tenure in Formula 1 has been enriching, with nearly 200 grand prix to my credit. I’m grateful for those experiences. However, the adrenaline rush of winning and competing for championships is something I’ve started to miss.”
His primary sporting motivation now lies in prestigious races like Le Mans, where he can dream of and strategize for victories. He reflects on his F1 days, “It was more about securing a point or two, or perhaps a P5 or P6 in the constructors’ championship. After so many years, the desire to compete for wins and championships has only grown stronger, and I believe I can achieve that with BMW.”
