The NASCAR community was rocked by surprising news during the Olympics break when Spire Motorsports announced the departure of Corey LaJoie at the end of the 2024 season. LaJoie, who has been instrumental in the growth of the Chevy team, particularly in inspiring significant investments, is being let go due to unmet performance expectations.
Kevin Harvick, the 2014 Cup Series champion, and soon-to-be ex-SHR driver, has shared his perspective on the situation, particularly focusing on who might replace LaJoie. Harvick’s ex-crew chief, Rodney Childers, is set to join Spire Motorsports in 2025, and Harvick believes the team now has a grander vision with Childers on board.
Harvick emphasized that the No. 7 seat likely won’t go to a rookie or a driver from the lower divisions. Instead, he predicts that an established Cup Series driver will fill the role alongside Ty Dillon and the new talent joining the team in 2025. This decision would align with Spire Motorsports’ apparent commitment to elevating their competitive status.
Harvick further noted that Spire Motorsports’ decision to part ways with LaJoie and bring in Childers signals their willingness to invest in top-tier resources. “They’ve made a statement,” Harvick said, “and now they need to back it up with the right driver signings.”
Among the potential candidates, Justin Haley of Rick Ware Racing (RWR) has emerged as a frontrunner for the seat. However, securing Haley’s services could come with challenges, given RWR’s strong connections with RFK Racing, which might complicate negotiations.
As the NASCAR world watches closely, the decision on who will land the coveted No. 7 seat in 2025 will be crucial in determining whether Spire Motorsports can truly capitalize on the momentum they’ve begun building with Childers’ arrival.
