The NASCAR Cup Series pitlane arrived at Gateway for the Enjoy Illinois 300. This is the second road course race of the 2024 season, with the previous race taking place at COTA, where a different driver emerged as the winner. As has been the case throughout the season, the race is anticipated as a competition between Toyota and Chevy teams.
All four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, along with the representative from 23XI Racing, are the favorites in the TRD pitlane. The Hendrick Motorsports drivers, led by their team leader, will be the main competitors on the Chevy side. However, according to the 2014 Cup champion, it is unlikely that any of these drivers will win and he anticipates a surprise victory from a low-performing team.
The former SHR driver is rooting for the Richard Childress Racing representative to win the race, as he is the defending champion of the race. This is a bold choice considering the fact that RCR has been fielding subpar cars for their number 8 driver throughout the season. Despite not consistently achieving good results, Gateway could be a turning point.
The co-hosts of The Happy Hour Podcast, as well as , also made their predictions for the race, and both ignored Kyle Busch. Vincie is putting his faith in the 2021 Cup champion, Kyle Larson, to bounce back from his disappointment at the Coke 600 and secure the victory.
Mamba Smith also made a bold prediction similar to Harvick’s. He believes that the HMS representative will end their winless streak this week. He believes the team has the necessary speed to redeem themselves after regaining their confidence.
Aside from the Chevy drivers, there may also be some Ford drivers who can compete on Sunday. Brad Keselowski from RFK Racing and Michael McDowell from FRM are the biggest hopes for the struggling side of Ford.
