Kevin Harvick Backs Ryan Blaney for Talladega Win, While Bold Predictions Eye Todd Gilliland

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the YellaWood 500, the second playoff race in the Round of 12. With a spot in the Round of 8 on the line, defending Cup champion Ryan Blaney is being backed by 2014 NASCAR Cup champion Kevin Harvick as the best bet to secure a pivotal win.

Harvick, known for his sharp analysis of the sport, believes Blaney’s strong history at Talladega—where he scored a statement victory last year—makes him the driver to watch. “I’m going to go with Blaney,” Harvick said, pointing to Team Penske’s excellent performance in wild card races this season. Blaney’s win at Talladega in the 2023 playoffs was a critical moment in his championship run, and Harvick sees a similar outcome this weekend potentially locking Blaney into the Championship 4.

“It’s just so wide open,” Harvick explained, referring to the unpredictable nature of superspeedway racing. He cited William Byron’s dramatic revival after a rough week as an example of how quickly things can change. Harvick believes Blaney is in a prime position to take advantage of the chaos that often characterizes races at Talladega.

“Bold Predictions for Todd Gilliland”

While Harvick’s pick of Blaney may seem the safe bet, co-host Matt Smith has made a more daring prediction, putting his money on Todd Gilliland. Smith points to the strong performances Gilliland’s team has shown on superspeedways, particularly referencing the pace and aggressiveness seen from the team in recent races.

“I’m going with Todd Gilliland,” Smith declared, noting that the driver has “nothing to lose” and that his aggressiveness could pay off in a high-stakes race like Talladega. Smith also reminded fans that a similar prediction came true earlier this season when Harrison Burton won at Daytona, another superspeedway, after being tipped as a contender. Gilliland, still searching for his first Cup Series win, might just have his breakthrough moment at Talladega.

“The Battle for Playoff Glory”

As the playoffs heat up, Talladega remains one of the most unpredictable tracks on the NASCAR circuit. Non-playoff drivers, like Gilliland, have a real shot at playing spoiler, while the playoff field battles for crucial points. With drivers like Blaney and Gilliland poised to make their mark, this weekend’s race promises to be a thrilling showdown.

For Blaney, another win at Talladega could pave his way to the Championship 4, easing his path to a second consecutive title. Meanwhile, Gilliland could make a major splash by claiming his first Cup Series victory and proving Smith’s bold prediction right.

Talladega has a way of delivering the unexpected, and fans will be watching closely to see whose prediction—Harvick’s safe bet on Blaney or Smith’s bold call for Gilliland—will come true.
