Kaulig Racing’s Bold Fitness Revolution: Crew Chiefs Hit the Treadmill in Quest for NASCAR Glory

In the high-octane world of NASCAR, where split-second decisions and precision engineering define success, Kaulig Racing is taking a radically unconventional approach to gain an edge in the 2025 Cup Series season. Instead of solely focusing on cars and engines, the team is focusing on the fitness of its crew chiefs, spearheaded by the team’s president, Chris Rice.

A fitness-first philosophy

Chris Rice, a veteran of the NASCAR scene and Kaulig Racing’s president since 2016, has made a name for himself with a “whatever it takes” attitude. This year, that mantra is extending beyond car setups and race strategies to the health and well-being of his crew chiefs. Rice, who recently showcased his own remarkable weight loss transformation on social media, is championing fitness as a way to boost both physical and mental sharpness within the team.

In a video uploaded to X (formerly Twitter), Rice revealed the new fitness regimen for his three Xfinity Series crew chiefs. “It ain’t about how fast you can make the car run,” Rice said in the clip, “it’s about the mental stability.” The crew chiefs are committing to walking or running at least a mile each day at the racetrack, and Rice himself is leading by example, having already completed his workout before joining them.

Kaulig Racing’s ambitious plans for 2025

Kaulig Racing enters its fourth Cup Series season with high expectations. The team has expanded to field two full-time drivers in the Cup Series and aims to secure playoff spots this year. Rice, who rose from humble beginnings as a gasman in his family’s race team to one of NASCAR’s most respected team executives, is determined to translate the team’s off-season hard work into on-track success.

This focus on fitness reflects Rice’s understanding that NASCAR is as much a mental game as a physical one. “Hard work pays off,” he emphasized in a recent social media post showing his personal fitness journey. “Take care of yourself, please! Smile, it’s good for you!” It’s a message he’s now bringing to his crew chiefs, emphasizing that their physical and mental health directly impact their ability to devise race-winning strategies under pressure.

The science behind the strategy

While unconventional, Rice’s focus on fitness aligns with research linking physical health to cognitive performance. NASCAR crew chiefs face immense pressure to make split-second decisions, and mental clarity is paramount. A healthier lifestyle can lead to improved concentration, better stress management, and sharper strategic thinking—all vital components of success on the pit box.

Moreover, fitness in NASCAR isn’t just for drivers anymore. In a sport where the smallest margins can determine the outcome, Kaulig Racing’s holistic approach could set a new standard. Rice’s insistence that “we worry about you” reflects a broader cultural shift within the team, one that prioritizes personal well-being alongside professional performance.

A team ready to shine

Kaulig Racing’s dedication to innovation, both on and off the track, positions it as a team to watch in 2025. With Rice’s leadership and a renewed emphasis on teamwork, the crew chiefs—now equipped with both mental and physical stamina—could be the secret weapon that helps propel Kaulig Racing to new heights.

As the Cup Series season revs up, the big question is whether Rice’s fitness-first philosophy will yield tangible results. If the team’s expanded operations and innovative methods pay off, Kaulig Racing might just rewrite the playbook for success in NASCAR.
