Justin Allgaier Reflects on Strong Atlanta Performance: ‘You Can’t Be Upset

JR Motorsports has been riding high on a wave of success over the past fortnight. The team, helmed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., made a triumphant debut in the Cup Series by securing a spot in the Daytona 500. Adding to the joy, Justin Allgaier drove the No. 7 Chevrolet to a commendable tenth-place finish in the Great American Race. Allgaier continued the momentum with a solid performance at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a venue where he owns a 2021 victory.

The 38-year-old Illinois native, Justin Allgaier, entered the Atlanta race with a winner’s mentality. Despite facing tough competition, he came tantalizingly close to the checkered flag. His strong performance was testament to his determination and competitive spirit.

Before the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion headed to Daytona, he was given a piece of advice from his wife, which he took to heart: “Enjoy the championship while you can because when you get to Daytona, you’re a zero again.” Following a tenth-place finish at Daytona 500, Allgaier qualified fourth for the Bennett Transportation & Logistics 250. He put up a good fight against Austin Hill’s fiery pace and Aric Almirola, ultimately securing a runner-up spot.

After the race, Allgaier demonstrated a level-headed attitude towards his result. He acknowledged challenges faced during the race, including a lack of support from the pack behind him. However, he affirmed his efforts with a succinct four-word statement: “You can’t be upset.”

Justin Allgaier’s second-place finish was the result of a tough competition against Aric Almirola. Allgaier shared, “Yeah, we rubbed doors coming to the line. Obviously, we’ve been buddies for a long time, he came over, and we talked about it. He said he was trying to back up to me to get a run on the 21. I think he backed up a little more than I expected and I just went by him. So not exactly what he was thinking… Austin was amazingly fast tonight. He did a great job of managing the lines and doing what he needed to do.”

Allgaier also commended the race winner, Austin Hill, who set new records in the race. Before Atlanta, Hill was close to breaking Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s record for most laps led at drafting tracks in Xfinity Series history (691). However, Hill surpassed this record by leading 734 circuits after charging upfront for 143 of 164 laps on Saturday. He crossed the finish line 0.216 seconds ahead of Allgaier.

The victory marked Richard Childress Racing’s second consecutive win to start the season and their third consecutive win at Atlanta for Hill. This impressive start sets the bar high for other teams at superspeedways. The grid will now prepare for the Circuit of The Americas (COTA), where road courses could yield different results.

Despite the outcome, Justin Allgaier remains optimistic early in the season. It remains to be seen if the JRM No. 7 team can turn this positive momentum into a win soon.
