Josef Newgarden Shatters Penske’s Drought with Thrilling IndyCar Victory in Nashville!

NTT IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden (2) races during the Music City Grand Prix at the Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025.

Josef Newgarden Shatters Penske’s Drought with Thrilling IndyCar Triumph in Nashville

In a breathtaking finale to the 2025 IndyCar season, Josef Newgarden emerged victorious at the Nashville Superspeedway, snapping Team Penske’s long-standing winless streak! As the 17th race of the season unfolded, fans were treated to a gripping spectacle of high-speed action and nail-biting drama, culminating in a triumphant moment for Newgarden and his team.

The race, spanning an exhilarating 225 laps, showcased intense side-by-side racing, where overtaking was a challenging endeavor. However, a late caution flipped the script, granting Newgarden the opportunity to seize the lead with just a handful of laps remaining. He held off fierce competition from his teammate to clinch the top spot, delivering Team Penske its second win of the entire season—a much-needed boost for the storied racing team that had been struggling throughout the year.

Alex Palou, who has been a formidable force all season, finished in a commendable second place. The reigning champion displayed remarkable skill and tenacity, battling tirelessly for the lead, including an epic back-and-forth with Pato O’Ward that spanned an astonishing ten laps early in the race. With an impressive 13 podium finishes out of 17 races, Palou leaves this season with his head held high.

Not to be overshadowed, Scott McLaughlin secured third place, representing Team Penske on the podium once more. McLaughlin was on the cusp of victory himself but narrowly avoided disaster when he brushed the wall with just 20 laps to go. Demonstrating exceptional control, he kept his car intact and fought hard to finish strong.

Kyffin Simpson made waves by finishing fourth, marking the second-best result of his career, while Conor Daly rounded out the top five, showcasing the potential of Juncos Hollinger Racing. The race was a true testament to the grit and determination of these talented drivers.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing on the track. Firestone’s tire issues plagued the event, with several drivers experiencing failures that drastically altered the race’s outcome. The most devastating incident occurred on lap 126 when Pato O’Ward, who had been leading with a commanding performance, suffered a catastrophic tire failure. His Chevy crashed into the wall, ending his day prematurely and leaving him visibly distraught, despite emerging unscathed.

Alex Palou also faced tire troubles but managed to navigate to the pits without losing significant ground, showcasing the resilience that earned him the championship title. Firestone later confirmed the failures were due to cuts rather than wear, prompting drivers to exercise increased caution for the remainder of the race.

The season finale also saw some unfortunate fates for other competitors. David Malukas, in a shocking twist, collided with rookie Louis Foster, resulting in a hard crash that sent him spinning into the wall while he was running in second place. He was airlifted to a local hospital as a precaution, but thankfully, medical updates later confirmed he was awake and alert—an encouraging sign for the young star.

Christian Rasmussen also had a harrowing experience, crashing on the very first lap and failing to finish the race. Mechanical issues sidelined Christian Lundgaard early, and Will Power, still uncertain about his future with the team, struggled mightily, ending the race in a disappointing 21st position after a pit mishap.

As the dust settles on a dramatic season filled with twists and turns, the drivers and teams are gearing up for a long off-season, with preparations for the 2026 season already on the horizon. For Josef Newgarden and Team Penske, this victory in Nashville not only signifies a hard-fought win but also signals a potential resurgence as they look to reclaim their dominance in the world of IndyCar racing.
