Liam Lawson: Red Bull’s Gamble and F1’s Next Big Test

Liam Lawson is stepping into the Red Bull Racing spotlight alongside Max Verstappen in 2025, but with a stark warning from Jos Verstappen, the father of the four-time world champion. Having personally faced the wrath of racing alongside a generational talent like Michael Schumacher, Jos urged Lawson to avoid falling into the same trap that derailed his own Formula 1 career.

Lessons from the Past: Jos Verstappen’s Benetton Struggles

In 1994, Jos Verstappen debuted in Formula 1 as Michael Schumacher’s teammate at Benetton. While Schumacher skyrocketed to his first world title, Jos struggled to keep pace and was swiftly dropped from the team. Reflecting on that experience, Jos admitted his biggest mistake: trying to match a world champion at all costs.

“He should not make the mistake I made at Benetton in 1994: trying to keep up with Max at all costs. He should do his own thing,” Jos advised Lawson.

Schumacher’s dominance within the team left no room for error, and Jos believes Max’s intense competitiveness could similarly overwhelm an inexperienced teammate if Lawson fails to focus on his strengths.

The Challenge of Racing Against Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen has built a reputation for dismantling his teammates’ confidence, outperforming them in nearly every head-to-head battle. Drivers like Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and Sergio Perez have faced the brunt of Max’s relentless dominance. While Michael Schumacher cultivated a sense of stability with his teammates, Max’s approach has often been more uncompromising, demanding peak performance from himself and his team.

For Lawson, this partnership presents both opportunity and peril. While he has the chance to learn from a generational talent, the pressure to perform at Max’s level could threaten his F1 career if not carefully managed.

A New Chapter for Red Bull and Verstappen

Lawson enters Red Bull during a crucial moment for the team. After a rocky second half of the 2024 season, Red Bull’s dominance was shaken, exposing vulnerabilities in their car’s performance across various conditions. Even Max Verstappen admitted that the team’s mid-season struggles served as a wake-up call.

“Red Bull needs to build a car that is more predictable in all conditions,” Jos Verstappen commented. “Looking at the second half of 2024, you can’t be optimistic. Red Bull just hasn’t managed to make the car consistently fast, so why should that be the case this year?”

Max echoed these concerns, acknowledging that defending his title in 2025 will be no easy task. With rivals such as Ferrari, Mercedes, and even McLaren closing the gap, Red Bull faces pressure to deliver a more stable and competitive package.

Liam Lawson’s Uphill Battle

At 22 years old, Lawson’s debut alongside Verstappen is a defining moment in his career. While Jos advises him to avoid focusing solely on matching Max, Lawson will also need to prove his worth in a team notorious for favoring its lead driver. His ability to manage expectations, deliver consistent results, and carve his identity within the team will determine whether he flourishes or falters.

2025: A Crucial Year for Red Bull and Its Drivers

As Red Bull prepares for what could be one of its most challenging seasons, the dynamic between Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson will be closely scrutinized. With Jos Verstappen’s cautionary tale as a guide, Lawson’s approach to his partnership with Max could set the tone for his Formula 1 career. Meanwhile, Max faces the task of solidifying his dominance amid growing competition and internal challenges at Red Bull.

The stakes are high, and for Lawson, the advice is clear: stay focused, stay measured, and chart your own path.
