Guenther Steiner Slams Jos Verstappen: “Zip It for Max’s Sake!”

Jos Verstappen, father of reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, has opened up about his turbulent career in F1, admitting he isn’t proud of his time in the sport. Despite competing alongside legends like Michael Schumacher during his eight-season stint from 1994 to 2003, the Dutchman never found lasting success, an experience that shaped how he mentored his son to greatness.

“Not Proud of My Career”

Jos Verstappen was thrust into the limelight when he joined the Benetton team in 1994 as a teammate to Michael Schumacher. While Schumacher claimed his first world championship that year, Jos managed just 10 points, marred by mistakes and an infamous incident at the German Grand Prix where his car erupted in flames during a pit stop.

“To be honest, I’m not proud of my career,” Jos admitted. “People remember me because of the fireball at Hockenheim in 1994. My car caught fire while refueling. I made mistakes.”

Lessons Learned the Hard Way

Reflecting on his struggles, Jos highlighted his overambition during his early years with Benetton. Paired with the ultra-talented Schumacher, Jos pushed himself beyond his capabilities, resulting in errors that derailed his career.

“I wanted to drive as fast as him, especially in the race. But I couldn’t do that with my limited experience. That’s why I made mistakes,” he said. “I wanted to bang my head against a wall.”

These experiences, while painful, were lessons Jos ensured would not be repeated by his son, Max Verstappen. Jos imparted hard-earned wisdom to Max, emphasizing patience, discipline, and learning from his own failures.

Max Verstappen: A Legacy Redefined

Jos’s regret-filled career served as a blueprint for crafting Max into the dominant force he is today. Under Jos’s guidance, Max became the youngest driver to debut in F1 at 17 and has since shattered records, winning four consecutive world championships by 2024.

Jos has often been credited as a demanding mentor, employing unconventional and sometimes harsh methods to prepare Max for the pressures of elite motorsport. Despite his controversial approach, the results are undeniable: Max Verstappen is now considered one of the greatest talents in F1 history.

A Father’s Redemption Through His Son

While Jos Verstappen may view his F1 career with disappointment, his contributions to Max’s success have granted him a legacy of a different kind. The elder Verstappen transformed his failures into opportunities for Max, creating a driver capable of excelling in the high-stakes world of Formula 1.

“I gave Max the message not to make this mistake,” Jos said. “I couldn’t achieve what I wanted in F1, but watching Max succeed is more than enough for me.”

Jos’s story is a testament to the power of redemption, showing how one man’s missed opportunities can pave the way for a legacy of triumph. While his own career might be remembered for its shortcomings, Jos Verstappen’s role in shaping Max’s meteoric rise ensures his name will always remain a part of Formula 1’s history.
