In a shocking revelation, Jonathan Wheatley, the former Sporting Director of Red Bull, has unveiled the decisive moment that led to his departure from the powerhouse team. This bombshell disclosure comes as Wheatley has taken the reins at Sauber, steering them into a new era as the Audi F1 team.

The 58-year-old veteran of the sport was part of a significant personnel shakeup in 2024, alongside luminaries like Adrian Newey. Wheatley’s departure from Red Bull was catalyzed by intense media speculation that surfaced in Miami last year, causing a media frenzy around his future at the team.

Wheatley candidly shared, “I wasn’t happy. I had a very, very low media profile at the time, on purpose and then suddenly my name was in all the papers, which created a difficult situation at work.” This revelation sheds light on the internal turmoil that ultimately led to his exit from Red Bull after a long and illustrious tenure.

Despite committing to Red Bull for 19 years, Wheatley’s unwavering dedication to honoring his contracts led him to explore new opportunities as various teams expressed interest in acquiring his expertise. The allure of a new challenge with Audi proved too enticing to resist, as Wheatley expressed his excitement for the groundbreaking project ahead.

The transition from Sauber to Audi under Wheatley’s leadership marks a significant milestone in his career, with plans to expand the team’s operations across different locations. Wheatley’s meticulous and detail-driven approach has been instrumental in Sauber’s resurgence, culminating in Nico Hulkenberg’s remarkable podium finish at Silverstone.

As Wheatley embarks on this new chapter with Audi, the motorsport world is abuzz with anticipation for the transformative journey that lies ahead. The unprecedented changes on the horizon promise to revolutionize the F1 landscape, with Wheatley at the helm of this thrilling evolution.

Stay tuned for more updates on Jonathan Wheatley’s remarkable career trajectory and the groundbreaking developments unfolding at the forefront of F1’s dynamic evolution.
