Johnny Herbert Jokes About a Rigged Boxing Match With Jos Verstappen Amid F1 Controversy

Guenther Steiner Slams Jos Verstappen: “Zip It for Max’s Sake!”

As the dust settles on the turbulent 2024 Formula 1 season, Johnny Herbert has taken a lighthearted jab at the swirling rumors surrounding his relationship with Jos Verstappen, father of four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Amid claims of favoritism and alleged bias by British media and F1 stewards, Herbert clarified his position and even joked about facing Jos in a hypothetical boxing match—with the odds rigged in his favor.

Herbert Denies Rift With Verstappen Sr.

In response to rumors that he had a strained relationship with Jos Verstappen, Herbert, a former F1 driver and now an FIA steward, emphasized there’s no bad blood between them.

“I do not have a problem with Jos. I think it is the same the other way around. If we saw each other in the paddock, I am sure we’d say hi and shake hands. He protects his son, and I respect him for that. You’d expect him to,” Herbert stated.

The “Boxing Match” Joke

Adding a dose of humor to the situation, Herbert quipped about a fictional boxing match against Jos Verstappen.

“If [we see Johnny Herbert vs. Jos Verstappen in the boxing ring], I’d make sure he would have mittens, and I would have the heaviest gloves you could buy. It would be one way!”

The 60-year-old joked that Jos’ strength would require some handicapping, ensuring Herbert could come out on top in this imaginary bout.

Respect and Humor Behind the Scenes

Herbert also shared his admiration for Jos’ unwavering support for Max Verstappen, despite the controversies surrounding the Dutchman.

“We both have our opinions. As far as I am concerned, my relationship with Jos hasn’t changed. I like him. I have known him for a very long time. I love his sense of humor, and it is wonderful to see a father relish the enjoyment of his son’s achievements.”

Jos Verstappen, a fierce advocate for his son’s career, has largely refrained from commenting publicly on the perceived stewarding controversies. However, Herbert’s remarks suggest a level of mutual understanding and camaraderie, despite their differing views.

Red Bull’s Focus Shifts to 2025

While personal dynamics within the paddock have been a hot topic, Red Bull Racing faces more pressing challenges. The RB20’s inconsistency left the team third in the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, far below their usual dominance. With the competition heating up from McLaren and Ferrari, Red Bull’s winter break will be critical as they work on refining their chassis for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead

The lighthearted exchange between Herbert and Jos Verstappen offers a glimpse into the humor and camaraderie that can exist even amid the high stakes of Formula 1. As the sport prepares for a new season, drivers, teams, and stewards alike will look to leave the controversies of 2024 behind.

For now, the focus remains on the intense competition brewing for 2025—one where Red Bull, Max Verstappen, and his rivals will again push the limits on and off the track. Whether or not Jos ever dons mittens for a sparring session with Herbert remains a question for the paddock’s imagination!
