Joey Logano’s Third NASCAR Cup Title Sparks Controversy—But He’s Not Apologizing

Joey Logano should be celebrating his third NASCAR Cup Series championship as he prepares to defend his crown at the 2025 Daytona 500.

Instead, he’s facing backlash like never before.

The Penske driver is no stranger to controversy, but his latest title reign has been met with criticism from fans, analysts, and even fellow competitors—with many claiming he “wasn’t the real champion”.

Why? Because Logano didn’t dominate the season—he mastered the playoff system.

And now, as NASCAR heads into a new season with the same format, Logano is firing back at the doubters.

The Stats Don’t Lie—But Do They Tell the Whole Story?

The 2024 regular season wasn’t a highlight reel for Logano.

  • He finished 15th in the standings.
  • He won only once before the playoffs.
  • He wasn’t even close to being the most consistent driver all year.

Yet, when it mattered most, he turned it on.

  • He won three times in the playoffs, more than anyone.
  • He clinched the winner-take-all finale at Phoenix.
  • He executed the system to perfection.

That’s how the NASCAR Playoffs work—but it hasn’t stopped critics from questioning whether Logano truly “earned” his championship.

“He’s not deserving.”
“He didn’t earn it.”
“The best driver didn’t win.”

Logano has heard it all. But he’s not letting it diminish what he accomplished.

Logano Claps Back: “It Doesn’t Take Anything Away”

When asked about the criticism surrounding his championship, Logano didn’t hold back.

“It doesn’t take anything away, in my opinion,” Logano told reporters.

And while NASCAR hasn’t changed its system for 2025, discussions are already underway about potential changes for 2026 and beyond.

But Logano? He likes the system just fine.

“We all knew the rules going in,” he said. “The goal is to win when it matters—and that’s exactly what we did.”

And he has a point. This is how NASCAR has crowned champions since 2014—and Logano has now won two of his three titles under this format (2018, 2024).

So if he’s playing by the rules and winning within the system, why should he apologize?

The Bigger Question: Will NASCAR Fix the Playoff System?

Despite Logano’s defense of his title, NASCAR officials aren’t ignoring the controversy.

  • Many believe the current format devalues season-long excellence.
  • The Championship 4 race is a one-shot deal, meaning an entire season can come down to a single race—even if a driver wasn’t dominant throughout the year.
  • Alternative formats are already being discussed, including:
    • Giving more weight to regular-season performance.
    • Extending the Championship Round to multiple races instead of one.
    • A hybrid system that balances season consistency with playoff intensity.

For now, however, Logano is the champion—and the system isn’t changing in 2025.

But could the backlash lead to a major format shake-up in 2026?

Only time will tell.

Can Logano Silence the Critics at Daytona?

Logano’s 2025 season begins where it all matters most—the Daytona 500.

If he can start strong and dominate early, it might help quiet the critics.

But if he struggles out of the gate? Expect the narrative of an “undeserving champion” to only grow louder.

For now, though, one thing is clear:

Joey Logano doesn’t care what the haters think—he’s focused on winning. Again.
