Joey Logano admits that the glove controversy was a difficult situation for his team. The driver, who has won the Cup Series twice for Team Penske Racing, found himself in trouble at Atlanta Motor Speedway last week. He was caught wearing racing gloves that did not have SFI approval and, consequently, was penalized with a stop at the beginning of the race.
NASCAR later deemed Logano’s use of the gloves a safety violation and fined him $10,000. The gloves were found sewn together, giving Logano a slight advantage as an aerodynamic device on the track. In an effort to clarify the situation, NASCAR displayed the gloves before the Las Vegas race.
Logano describes the incident as “embarrassing” and has now spoken out about the saga. He admits that, although he did not personally create the gloves, he takes responsibility as the driver. He acknowledges that it was a challenging situation for the whole team.
“As a driver, I work closely with the team and I must take some responsibility for this. Obviously, I shouldn’t have used the glove. However, it’s important to emphasize that I didn’t make the glove myself. I don’t know how to sew, you know? So, yes, that’s what happened and we’re discussing it. What makes me proud is that our team handled this difficult situation and we overcame it, even though it was embarrassing,” Logano told Fox Sports.
Despite the controversy, Logano has put it behind him and secured the pole position for the Vegas race. He sees it as a reaffirmation of his No. 22 team, which has consistently secured front row starts in the first three races of the season.
However, Logano also needs to overcome the bad luck he has experienced in the last two races, which has put him at the bottom of the points table. He is determined to return to winning form and redeem himself.
