Joe Gibbs Racing Shake-Up: Chris Gabehart Reflects on His Emotional Departure as Denny Hamlin’s Crew Chief

In a surprising twist that rocked the NASCAR paddock, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) made the tough call to replace Chris Gabehart as Denny Hamlin’s crew chief after a six-year partnership that turned the No. 11 team into perennial championship contenders. Gabehart, promoted to the role of JGR competition director, recently opened up about the bittersweet decision and its impact on his relationship with Hamlin.

“A Tough Pill to Swallow”: Gabehart and Hamlin’s Reaction

Gabehart didn’t shy away from admitting that both he and Hamlin were disappointed by the decision. Speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR, Gabehart explained the emotional toll of being separated from a driver with whom he shared a deep professional bond.

“Is he disappointed? Sure. Am I disappointed? Sure,” Gabehart said candidly. “We don’t live in a vacuum where every decision is 100% good and 0% bad; this is hard stuff.”

The change marks the end of an era for one of NASCAR’s most consistent partnerships. Under Gabehart’s guidance, Hamlin emerged from a performance slump, securing multiple wins, including three Daytona 500 victories, and becoming a constant threat for the championship.

A Decision for the Greater Good

While the decision was difficult, Gabehart emphasized its necessity for the future of JGR. His new role as competition director aims to elevate the performance of the entire organization, a move he believes will benefit Hamlin and the team as a whole.

“Nothing about it is easy, but the reality is, as professionals, we know that what we’re trying to do is make Joe Gibbs Racing better,” Gabehart stated. “It’s these types of decisions that have given Denny a 20-year successful career at this company.”

Despite the personal sting of the decision, Gabehart expressed confidence in Hamlin’s ability to thrive under a new crew chief in the upcoming 2025 season. He believes the reorganization will provide the resources and support Hamlin needs to continue competing at the highest level.

“These things aren’t easy; there’s never an absolute. This one is no different,” Gabehart explained. “I’m confident he’s going to have everything he needs to succeed next year.”

Looking Ahead to 2025

Gabehart’s promotion signals JGR’s commitment to strengthening its overall competitiveness. As competition director, Gabehart will oversee the performance of all JGR teams, aiming to replicate the success he had with Hamlin across the entire garage.

For Hamlin, the change represents a new challenge in his illustrious career. While the driver-crew chief dynamic is vital to success in NASCAR, Hamlin’s experience and talent position him to adapt quickly to his new leadership.

A Partnership to Remember

The mutual respect between Gabehart and Hamlin is clear, with both acknowledging the positive impact they’ve had on each other’s careers. Gabehart’s comments reflect the deep admiration he holds for Hamlin and the team they built together.

As NASCAR gears up for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Hamlin to see how he performs with a new crew chief and on Gabehart to determine how his broader influence shapes the trajectory of JGR. One thing is certain: this shake-up underscores the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines Joe Gibbs Racing.
