Joe Gibbs is currently looking for a suitable successor for Martin Truex Jr. The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion announced that he will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season. Truex made this announcement alongside Joe Gibbs, the head of Joe Gibbs Racing, at a special press conference held before a race in Iowa.
Truex joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019 after a successful period with Furniture Row Racing. Since joining the team, he has won 15 Cup races and finished second in the championship three times. Except for a disappointing season in 2022, Truex consistently made the playoffs and easily reached the final eight stage.
The official confirmation of Truex’s retirement from full-time racing in 2024 puts immense pressure on Joe Gibbs to find a skilled driver to take his place. During the press conference in Iowa, owner Joe Gibbs acknowledged that the team has not yet made a decision and is actively working to find a replacement. Their current focus is to provide Truex with the best farewell possible.
When asked if he believes it is the right time for Truex to slow down, Joe Gibbs stated that this is not his decision. He confirmed that, unlike previous years, he knew his driver was ready to retire after discussing it with him.
As a former NFL Hall of Fame player, Joe Gibbs has the responsibility of finding the most suitable replacement for the veteran driver and will be working diligently to ensure the best available option. One of the most talked-about options is Chase Briscoe from SHR, who will become a free agent in 2025.
