Joe Gibbs’ Bold Move: Plan to Cut Ties with Tony Stewart’s $9.4 Billion Partner Exposed

The NASCAR Cup Series is all about adapting to change, and for Chase Briscoe, 2025 marks a major turning point in his career. After the closure of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2024, the young driver will now take the wheel of the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), stepping into the shoes of retiring NASCAR legend Martin Truex Jr. However, Briscoe’s journey into this new chapter comes with a significant twist: his longtime sponsor, Mahindra Tractors, won’t be joining him.

From SHR’s Sunset to a New Dawn at JGR

The closure of SHR after 16 years of competition sent shockwaves through the NASCAR world. Tony Stewart’s team, which notched 70 Cup Series wins, bowed out with a bang, thanks in part to Briscoe’s victory at Darlington in May 2024. That win, showcasing the iconic Mahindra Tractors livery, was a fitting tribute to SHR’s legacy and Briscoe’s rise as a top-tier Cup Series driver.

But as SHR closed its doors, Briscoe needed a new home—and Joe Gibbs Racing offered him a golden opportunity to pilot the No. 19 car. This move places him among an elite roster at JGR, including drivers like Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Ty Gibbs.

No Mahindra, No Problem?

Mahindra Tractors, which joined Briscoe in 2022 and played a key role in his career development, will not follow him to JGR. During a Reddit AMA, Briscoe confirmed the absence of Mahindra on his No. 19 car, noting JGR’s meticulous approach to sponsorship deals. Instead, Bass Pro Shops, a long-time JGR partner, will step in to back Briscoe.

“I am blessed that Johnny Morris and Bass Pro are on board to help us carry on the legacy of the 19 car,” Briscoe said. “As an avid outdoorsman, I feel a lot of pride in now being a part of the Bass Pro brand, and I’m extremely grateful for this partnership.”

While Mahindra’s departure may be a loss emotionally, the financial and branding power of Bass Pro Shops ensures that Briscoe will have the resources he needs to succeed at JGR.

A Legacy to Uphold

Filling Martin Truex Jr.’s seat is no small task. Truex, a former Cup Series champion, made the No. 19 car a force to be reckoned with, earning multiple victories with the support of Bass Pro Shops. For Briscoe, the pressure will be immense, but his track record shows he’s up for the challenge.

Briscoe’s ability to perform under pressure was evident during his time with SHR. With Mahindra as his primary sponsor, he delivered 7 top-five and 13 top-ten finishes over two seasons, including a dramatic win at Phoenix Raceway in just his 40th Cup Series start. His knack for adapting to high-stakes situations will be critical as he transitions to JGR.

Can Briscoe Thrive Without Mahindra?

The absence of Mahindra Tractors could be seen as a setback, but JGR’s track record of success and the backing of Bass Pro Shops provide a strong foundation for Briscoe’s future. Additionally, JGR’s legendary team owner, Joe Gibbs, is known for fostering talent and creating winning environments.

Briscoe has already expressed his excitement about joining Gibbs’ meticulously run organization:
“The biggest thing is just how Coach is extremely involved in the day-to-day and how he’s always at the shop.”

If Briscoe can channel his adaptability and build on the resources JGR provides, there’s every reason to believe he can thrive—even without Mahindra.

A High-Stakes Transition

Chase Briscoe’s move to JGR is undoubtedly a gamble, but it’s also an opportunity to solidify his place among NASCAR’s elite. With the legacy of the No. 19 car at stake and a powerhouse like Bass Pro Shops in his corner, Briscoe has the tools to succeed. However, the road ahead won’t be easy. Balancing the expectations of JGR, the legacy of Martin Truex Jr., and the absence of his longtime sponsor will test Briscoe’s resilience and skill.

The question remains: can Chase Briscoe prove himself as a top-tier driver in one of NASCAR’s most storied teams? The 2025 season will provide the answers.
