Jimmie Johnson prepares for emotional farewell at Daytona 500: a legendary career reaches its climax

Jimmie Johnson’s Grand Finale: Daytona 500 2027 Marks the End of an Era

In a stunning revelation that has left fans and racing enthusiasts buzzing, Jimmie Johnson, the illustrious seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, has declared that the 2027 Daytona 500 will be the final chapter of his remarkable racing journey. With an impressive 702 starts under his belt, the 69th Daytona 500 will serve as the curtain call for one of the sport’s most iconic figures.

While Johnson's full-time tenure with Hendrick Motorsports concluded in 2020, his return to the track in recent years has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. After venturing into the realms of IMSA and IndyCar with Chip Ganassi Racing, he found his way back to familiar territory as a team owner with Legacy Motor Club in 2023. Since then, Johnson has graced the NASCAR circuit in the No. 84 car, a vehicle he co-owns, but it’s his performance at Daytona where he has truly shined, clinching a remarkable third-place finish last year.

“Ending my career at Daytona just makes a lot of sense,” Johnson asserted during a press conference at the iconic speedway. “As a driver moonlighting in this sport, restrictor plate tracks are where I can truly be competitive. This car is unlike any I’ve driven before, and I want to leave on a high note.”

Reflecting on his illustrious career, which includes an astounding 83 wins that tie him with legends Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty, Johnson was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2024. This milestone has prompted deep introspection about how he wants to conclude his driving days. “This year is all about reflection and savoring the emotions of my time in this sport,” he shared. “I’m enjoying the moments and the conversations that come with it.”

While Legacy Motor Club is set to expand to three full-time cars in the upcoming season, Johnson will take a step back from driving in the Cup Series after February 2027. However, he remains enthusiastic about exploring new racing opportunities. “Anything with an engine interests me,” he expressed eagerly. “I’m even considering trying my hand at breaking speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats!”

Despite the excitement about future ventures, Johnson has ruled out a return to IndyCar. “The commitment needed to compete at that level isn’t something I can muster anymore,” he candidly admitted. Instead, his focus is on nurturing his race team and finding new avenues for competition.

As he gears up for what will undoubtedly be an emotional and exhilarating farewell, Johnson has set his sights on two prestigious endurance races: Daytona and Le Mans. “I would love to participate in those,” he stated passionately, though he acknowledged the logistical challenges of balancing commitments with his expanding team.

With the Daytona 500 on the horizon, fans are counting down to what promises to be an unforgettable finale for Jimmie Johnson—a fitting tribute to a racing legend whose impact on the sport will be felt for generations to come. As he prepares to take his final laps, one thing is certain: Jimmie Johnson’s legacy is far from over; it’s merely transitioning into a new chapter. Prepare for a legendary send-off that will reverberate through the annals of NASCAR history!
