Speculations surrounding Martin Truex Jr.’s retirement have been the hottest topic of discussion in the NASCSAR garage for some time now. The No. 19 Toyota Camry driver has been hinting at retirement since 2022 and has been signing one-year contract extensions. However, it seems that the seasoned veteran has finally reached a decision.
According to recent reports from Fox Sports, it has been confirmed that Martin Truex Jr. intends to retire from the sport at the end of this season. JGR has been eagerly awaiting this final decision in the past few weeks, and now that they have clarity about the future, they will be searching for the best replacement for the 2017 Cup champion.
Truex Jr. is undeniably one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history. The 44-year-old driver made his debut in the Cup Series in 2006 with Dale Earnhardt Inc. after winning consecutive titles in the Xfinity Series with Earnhardt’s second-tier team. However, it took over a decade for him to establish himself as a consistent winner in the Cup Series as he never had the opportunity to drive for a top-tier team until then.
By 2014, he had only managed to secure two Cup race victories. However, in the last ten seasons, he has triumphed in 32 Cup Series races, including winning the championship with FRM in 2017. He has also finished in second place in the championship standings twice during this period. Unfortunately, he has not yet won a race this season and will be looking to secure at least one victory before ending his career.
According to reports from Fox Sports, the leading candidate to replace Martin Truex Jr. at Joe Gibbs Racing will be a former Xfinity Series champion from Stewart Haas Racing. This individual currently holds the highest position among Cup drivers at SHR.
He is the most famous driver available on the market for 2025, considering that SHR will be ceasing its operations at the end of the season. Hiring his services will not be an easy task for JGR, as several teams have shown interest in signing him.
There are also reports that Briscoe’s teammate at SHR, who is a former TRD driver, has joined the list of candidates. His previous conflict with another driver is also a significant negative factor to be considered.
