Jenson Button’s Bold Retirement: “It Feels Really Good!”

In a stunning revelation that has shaken the motorsport world, Jenson Button, the revered 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, has officially announced his retirement from professional racing, declaring that it “feels really good” to close this exhilarating chapter of his life. The British racing legend, whose illustrious career spans over 306 Grand Prix starts between 2000 and 2017, is ready to embrace a new journey after a remarkable tenure behind the wheel.

Button, who dominated the track with 15 career victories, famously clinched the world title with Brawn GP in 2009, solidifying his place among the giants of Formula 1. After his last F1 race with McLaren at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix in 2017, he didn’t hang up his helmet just yet. Instead, he transitioned to other thrilling motorsport disciplines, including the World Endurance Championship, GT racing, and NASCAR, showcasing his relentless drive for competition.

In a candid conversation with Sky F1, Button reflected on his retirement decision, which he revealed last July when he announced his departure from the Cadillac Hertz Team Jota WEC. Initially, there was a glimmer of hope for a part-time return to racing in 2026, but reality struck as he confirmed his full exit from the professional racing scene ahead of the WEC season finale in Bahrain.

“It’s amazing to finally feel free after such an incredible journey,” Button shared. “It was a rollercoaster ride, but now I’m ready for the next adventure.” But what led to this monumental decision? The 45-year-old former champion explained, “You can’t play anymore in motorsport. It demands your full commitment, and I simply didn’t have the time needed to compete at that level.”

Reflecting on his time post-F1, Button revealed that the pandemic gave him a moment to ponder the future of his racing career. “When I left F1, I aimed to explore other racing avenues while I was still competitive. But as time passed, I realized that racing is serious business. I faced incredibly talented young drivers who are pushing the limits every time they hit the track. I just couldn’t commit the time necessary to keep up,” he stated.

As he embraces retirement, Button, who will continue to serve as an ambassador for the Williams F1 team, teased fans about his future on-screen appearances. “You’ll definitely be seeing more of me now—lucky you!” he joked, signaling an exciting new chapter in his life beyond the racetrack.

As the motorsport community processes this seismic shift, anticipation builds for the F1 2026 season, which promises to bring new regulations and drama. Jenson Button’s departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of drivers and fans alike.
