Jake Hughes’ shocking Formula E comeback: Mahindra’s bold move to reclaim lost talent

Mahindra Secures Jake Hughes: A Bold Move Formula E Won’t Forget!

In a dramatic twist of fate that has left the Formula E community buzzing, Jake Hughes has officially joined Mahindra Racing, marking a significant turn in his racing career. Just a few months ago, Hughes was on the brink of landing a coveted seat at Cupra Kiro alongside fellow British driver Dan Ticktum. The anticipation was palpable, with many within the team convinced of Hughes’ imminent promotion. However, behind the scenes, the owners had different ideas, ultimately leading to Hughes being sidelined in favor of Pepe Marti.

Hughes, undeterred by this setback, embraced the challenge head-on. After recalibrating his plans with his manager, Mark Blundell, he has now signed a groundbreaking deal with Mahindra, announced recently. While officially taking on the roles of reserve and simulator driver, Hughes’ primary focus will be on Gen4 testing, with fellow standby driver Kush Maini poised for any race-day duties this season.

“I think it’s obvious that I was looking and was hopeful of getting a race seat for season 12 and I was quite far down the line with one team,” Hughes stated, reflecting on his near-miss with Cupra. Displaying resilience, he added, “I’ve had to kind of readjust my plans… being a reserve driver and a development driver, especially in this pre-Gen4 year, is the next-best thing.”

Hughes’ move to Mahindra is more than just a job; it represents a strategic opportunity as he joins a team that is clearly on the rise. “It’s a team that looks like it has a really good atmosphere and is doing some really good things,” he remarked, showcasing his optimism about his new environment.

Since his last outing with Maserati, where misfortune struck during the London E-Prix, Hughes has remained active, even securing valuable track time with the McLaren Formula 1 team. His performance there reportedly impressed engineers, reinforcing his reputation as a promising talent within the motorsport arena.

Mahindra’s decision to hire Hughes is a masterstroke by team principal Frederic Bertrand, who recognizes the value of Hughes’ experience from his earlier days at Venturi. The team is currently navigating a complex landscape with its race lineup, as veterans Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara bring a wealth of experience and success to the table. However, the unpredictable nature of Formula E could present opportunities for Hughes to step into the spotlight sooner than expected.

Amidst these developments, Mahindra’s late confirmation of its Gen4 program has raised eyebrows. The team faces the daunting task of catching up with competitors, reminiscent of its rocky start with the Gen3 era. Yet, despite past challenges, Mahindra is poised for a stronger showing in the upcoming season, thanks to the groundwork laid for the Gen4 project.

Hughes’ entry is not just about filling a seat; it’s a calculated move to bolster Mahindra’s competitive edge. “I think I did a good job as a reserve driver for Mercedes back in the day… my goal is absolutely to be back on the grid for season 13,” he asserted, underscoring his ambition and determination to reclaim his place in the spotlight.

As Hughes embarks on this new chapter with Mahindra, the question remains: will he be the catalyst that propels the team to new heights in the electrifying world of Formula E? One thing is for sure—Jake Hughes is not just a driver; he is a force to be reckoned with, and his journey is only just beginning. Prepare yourself for a thrilling race ahead!
