Former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has ignited a firestorm with his controversial remarks, claiming that Max Verstappen’s absence would barely ripple the waters of Formula 1, while Lewis Hamilton’s departure would cause global shockwaves. The comments, made amidst Hamilton’s historic move to Ferrari, have divided fans and sparked heated debate in the motorsport world.

Villeneuve’s Explosive Comments
Jacques Villeneuve, never one to shy away from controversy, doubled down on his admiration for Lewis Hamilton while dismissing Max Verstappen’s impact on the sport. During a discussion about Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari for the 2025 season, Villeneuve lauded the seven-time champion, labeling him “the biggest driver of all time.”

“Lewis Hamilton is the biggest driver of all time because of the following he has. He’s very different. He’s unique. He’s broken the mould. There’s a lot that hangs on him. His image goes beyond F1,” Villeneuve stated.

Then came the comment that set the motorsport world ablaze: “Take Verstappen out of F1. Nobody cares. Take Hamilton out of F1, people care.”

The assertion quickly sparked backlash, with fans and pundits alike criticizing Villeneuve for undermining Verstappen’s achievements. The Dutchman, a four-time consecutive world champion, is widely regarded as one of the most talented drivers in Formula 1 history.

Hamilton’s Ferrari Move: A New Chapter
Villeneuve’s comments came in the wake of Lewis Hamilton’s monumental decision to leave Mercedes after 12 years and join Ferrari in a record-breaking deal worth over $430 million. Calling it “the most high-profile move since Michael Schumacher joined Ferrari,” Villeneuve hailed the signing as a masterstroke for the Scuderia.

“Signing Lewis was worth millions and millions, so it was the best move they’ve ever done,” Villeneuve said, emphasizing Hamilton’s unparalleled marketability and influence beyond the racetrack.

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has been seen as a bold gamble. At 39, the British driver aims to bring Ferrari back to championship glory, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the 2025 season.

The Legacy Debate: Hamilton vs. Verstappen
Villeneuve’s remarks have reignited the perennial debate over who reigns supreme in Formula 1: Hamilton or Verstappen. On one hand, Hamilton’s seven championships and his trailblazing role as the sport’s first Black driver have solidified his legacy as a transformative figure. His battle against racism, combined with his on-track dominance, has earned him global admiration.

On the other hand, Verstappen’s raw talent and aggressive style have captivated a new generation of fans. With four consecutive championships and an unwavering grip on the sport’s competitive landscape, the Dutch driver has cemented his place among the all-time greats.

Dismissing Verstappen’s influence as insignificant, as Villeneuve did, seems at odds with the reality of his dominance and the passionate fanbase he commands.

Fan Uproar and Backlash
The fallout from Villeneuve’s comments has been swift and severe. Social media erupted, with fans accusing the former champion of disrespecting Verstappen and stirring unnecessary controversy. “Discounting Verstappen’s achievements is not just unfair—it’s absurd,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Villeneuve needs to stop with these baseless comments. Verstappen has reshaped F1 just as much as Hamilton.”

Others defended Villeneuve, agreeing that Hamilton’s cultural impact transcends the sport in a way few athletes have managed. But even those supporters questioned the need to diminish Verstappen’s contributions to elevate Hamilton’s legacy.

The Bigger Picture
While both Hamilton and Verstappen are focused on their respective goals for the 2025 season, Villeneuve’s comments highlight the ongoing tension between different fanbases and eras in Formula 1. Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is poised to dominate headlines, but Verstappen’s quest for a fifth consecutive title ensures he remains a central figure in the sport’s narrative.

As Formula 1 evolves, comparisons between legends will persist. But one thing is certain: both Hamilton and Verstappen have shaped the sport in ways that will resonate for generations to come.
