Jacques Villeneuve blasts Franco Colapinto for ‘dangerous’ move that endangered Ollie Bearman

Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion, has launched a blistering attack on Franco Colapinto, attributing the catastrophic accident that sidelined Ollie Bearman during the Japanese Grand Prix to the Argentine driver’s reckless maneuvering. The jaw-dropping incident unfolded on Lap 21 at the iconic Suzuka Circuit, where the stakes were high, and tensions ran even higher.

As the race reached a critical juncture, Bearman found himself trailing behind Colapinto, who was struggling with a significant speed disadvantage due to his Alpine car’s energy harvesting mode. At approximately 50 km/h slower, Colapinto became a dangerous obstacle just as they approached the treacherous Spoon Curve. In a split-second decision, Bearman attempted to avoid a collision by veering left, but this ill-fated maneuver sent him careening onto the grass, spinning wildly across the track before crashing backward into the unforgiving tire wall.

The aftermath was harrowing. Bearman, visibly shaken and limping, was escorted to the medical center, leaving fans and fellow competitors on edge. Fortunately, he emerged unscathed, but the emotional and physical toll of the crash was palpable. Meanwhile, Colapinto managed to continue the race, ultimately finishing in 13th place, as the stewards controversially opted not to penalize him, a decision that has left many scratching their heads.

Villeneuve was unequivocal in his critique, expressing disbelief over the absence of repercussions for Colapinto. “A little move just as you approach the corner, in such a dangerous corner where he’s actually regenerating energy, is simply unacceptable,” he remarked. He highlighted the perils of the new regulations that have created dangerous speed differentials between drivers, stating, “There’s nothing Oliver could do. I don’t understand what Colapinto was thinking, moving at such a slow speed in such a dangerous place.”

Colapinto, on his part, has rejected any responsibility, insisting that his car’s significant slowdown was due to the energy harvesting system, not a lack of awareness. However, his track record is not without scrutiny; last season, he faced challenges matching the speed of his teammate, Pierre Gasly. This season, he has secured one point, indicating a glimmer of progress, but the shadows of his past performance linger.

Bearman, although frustrated, suggested that a little more room could have been afforded, yet it’s Colapinto who has largely danced around accountability for this explosive incident. As the F1 community grapples with the implications of this race, one thing is clear: the dialogue surrounding driver safety and accountability is more crucial than ever.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story continues to unfold, and the fallout from the Japanese Grand Prix reverberates across the racing world. The question remains—will there be lasting changes to ensure the safety of drivers amidst the high-speed chaos of Formula 1?
