Jack Doohan’s Future at Stake? Inside Alpine’s Tense Dynamics Revealed in Drive to Survive
ADVERTISEMENT

In the most recent teaser for Netflix’s hit F1 docuseries, Drive to Survive, Flavio Briatore, the executive advisor to the Alpine team, is seen asserting his control over new recruit Jack Doohan with the chilling words, “I control you”. This revelation has sent ripples across the F1 circuit, and fuelled speculation about Doohan’s future with the Alpine team.

Doohan, the prodigal son of Australian motorcycling legend Mick Doohan, was unveiled as Pierre Gasly’s teammate for the 2025 F1 season at the Dutch Grand Prix the previous year. This announcement came merely days before Franco Colapinto, Alpine’s current reserve driver, was elevated to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams for the concluding nine races of 2024.

Despite Williams’ commitment to Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon for the upcoming 2025 F1 season, Colapinto’s stellar performance caught the attention of several teams. His subsequent signing by Alpine in January as the team’s new reserve driver has led to growing anticipation of a potential swap during the 2025 season.

Williams team principal, James Vowles, has voiced his opinion that Alpine offers Colapinto the best opportunity to reclaim a racing seat, possibly as soon as this year. Meanwhile, Doohan’s contract with Alpine, which is rumoured to cover only the initial races of the 2025 F1 season, adds fuel to the speculation.

Doohan, despite making his F1 debut in the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi after Esteban Ocon’s early release to join Haas, is now rumoured to be on borrowed time. His performance, like all others on the 2025 grid, will determine his future in the upcoming season, according to reports by PlanetF1.com.

Doohan, however, has maintained his composure amidst the brewing storm. He expressed his understanding of Colapinto’s position as Alpine’s reserve driver during the F1 75 launch in London last week.

The former Renault team principal, Briatore, known for his controversial decisions, has returned to the Enstone-based team as an executive adviser. His role in the team is influential, spearheading strategies to steer Alpine back to the forefront of F1 racing. Additionally, he is considered to be Doohan’s manager and advisor to Fernando Alonso, the two-time World Champion now driving for Aston Martin.

The recent trailer of Drive to Survive showcases Briatore asserting his control over Doohan in a high-tension face-to-face meeting at Alpine’s factory. Despite his professional relationship with Doohan, Briatore has not dismissed the possibility of a change, if performance standards are not met.

Last year, Briatore assured PlanetF1.com that Alpine would commence the 2025 season with Gasly and Doohan, yet he cautioned that he wouldn’t hesitate to make changes if necessary. At the season-launch event in London, the 74-year-old re-emphasized his commitment to the strongest possible driver lineup for Alpine.

Despite the ongoing speculation around Doohan’s tenure at Alpine, he has received support from F1 commentator David Croft, who urges Alpine to publicly back the rookie during pre-season testing.

“Do that, and all the speculation stops,” Croft stated during the live television coverage of the opening day of testing in Bahrain. He empathized with Doohan’s predicament and asserted that the newbie deserves a fair chance to prove his worth, beyond just the first five races.

As the 2025 F1 season gears up, the motorsport world waits with bated breath to see how this high-stakes drama unfolds.
