The future of Jack Doohan’s career in Alpine F1 hangs in the balance, as the rookie driver enters the new season under a cloud of speculation. Ralf Schumacher, a veteran of the sport with six F1 victories to his name, opined that Doohan’s performance at the upcoming Australian Grand Prix could be a deciding factor.
Following Esteban Ocon’s move to Haas, Doohan was promoted from reserve to fill the void alongside Pierre Gasly. His debut was fast-tracked to the Abu Dhabi 2024 season finale, allowing Ocon to integrate with his new team ahead of schedule. However, the 22-year-old Doohan is already under the microscope, with his future in Alpine F1 being hotly debated even before his rookie season takes off.
The speculation was further fuelled when Alpine brought in Franco Colapinto, the rising star from Williams, as their F1 2025 reserve. Colapinto had a noteworthy entry into F1 last season, bagging five points in his nine starts with Williams. Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s executive advisor, did not quell the rumors of Colapinto replacing Doohan mid-season. Instead, he made it abundantly clear that he wouldn’t hesitate to make changes if deemed necessary.
According to insiders, Doohan’s place in F1 2025 hinges on his performance, a universal truth for all grid drivers. Schumacher, speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast, opined that Briatore might make his decision based on Doohan’s outing at the Australian Grand Prix. He said, “Flavio knows it himself, it could be over after Australia.”
Doohan needs to prove his mettle in Melbourne by delivering a standout performance. Success in the first few races could catapult him to stardom, but as of now, his prospects seem uncertain.
When confronted with the rumors at the F1 75 launch event at the O2 Arena in London, Doohan held his own. Alpine team principal, Oliver Oakes, noted that he was “proud” of Doohan’s interaction with the media but refrained from offering him any assurance.
In response to a query about quashing rumors of Doohan’s limited window to prove himself, Oakes stated, “It’s not my line!” He reiterated that as a team, they’ve been transparent about their plans. He wishes everyone, including Doohan, would focus on the tasks at hand.
“We’re here to go racing the best driver in the car, with the best engine in the car,” Oakes declared. He was candid about starting the season with Doohan and Gasly and waiting to see how things unfold.
As the Australian Grand Prix looms, the pressure on Doohan intensifies. His performance at home will not only determine his immediate future but also set the tone for his F1 career.
