Jack Doohan’s F1 Dreams Crumble: Is This the Heartbreaking End of His Racing Career?

Is Jack Doohan’s Formula 1 Dream Crashing Down?

The Formula 1 dreams of rising star Jack Doohan appear to be crumbling before our eyes. With the shocking announcement of Franco Colapinto joining Alpine for the 2026 season, Doohan’s aspirations for a coveted race seat seem all but extinguished. After being unceremoniously dropped by the team following just seven races, the young Australian has officially learned that his time with the Enstone operation is over.

Doohan burst onto the F1 scene with a spectacular debut at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year, stepping in for Esteban Ocon, who was set to join Haas. This opportunity was a testament to Doohan’s prowess, having previously made a name for himself as a race-winner in both Formula 2 and Formula 3. However, the winds of change have not been in his favor, and the recent developments have left his future hanging by a thread.

The announcement of Colapinto’s signing has sent shockwaves through the paddock—could this be the final nail in Doohan’s F1 coffin? Despite being touted as the team’s preferred driver, whispers of his impending doom had already begun circulating long before his call-up in Abu Dhabi. Speculations about Colapinto’s rise were rampant as early as late 2024, and the confirmation of his role at Alpine has only served to intensify the pressure on Doohan during a crucial phase of his career.

Publicly, Doohan was positioned as the team’s favorite, yet behind the scenes, the narrative told a different story. The arrival of a direct competitor for the same seat not only undermined his confidence but possibly accelerated his struggles on the track. It is crucial to note that Colapinto is not the villain in this tale; he and his management have simply pursued the best opportunities for his future, just as Doohan has done. The ultimate decision, however, lies with Alpine, who have opted to chart a different course.

Throughout this turbulent saga, Doohan has maintained a commendable level of professionalism, refusing to speak negatively about the team even after losing his seat to Colapinto. Yet, with the Argentinian’s confirmation for the upcoming season, it’s now time for Doohan to focus on salvaging his career.

As he approaches his 23rd birthday, the harsh reality is that the F1 door may be closing rapidly. Alpine has made it clear that they do not envision him in their future plans. Remaining as a test or reserve driver for another season could do more harm than good. The F1 driver market is notoriously cutthroat; just look at Zhou Guanyu, who despite three solid seasons alongside Valtteri Bottas, found himself without a seat. If Zhou can struggle to regain his footing, what chance does Doohan stand?

Seeking alternatives, Doohan has been linked to a potential move to Super Formula for the next season. While Formula 1 reigns supreme as the pinnacle of motorsport, Super Formula stands as a fierce competitor in terms of performance. With cars that bridge the gap between F1 and F2, this could be Doohan’s chance to reignite his racing career. Should that path not pan out, he might explore opportunities in GT or sports car racing, or even carve out a niche in Japan—options that could provide him with a fresh start.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow; Doohan’s F1 journey has been a brief yet significant chapter that lasted a mere seven races. While he may lament the abrupt end to his Formula 1 aspirations, it’s essential for him to recognize the fortuity of even making it to the grid when so many talented drivers, including Felipe Drugovich and Theo Pourchaire, never got the chance.

As the dust settles on this tumultuous chapter, the question remains: what does the future hold for Jack Doohan? With the right move, he could still find a way back to the top. The world of motorsport is unpredictable, and with resilience, he may still emerge victorious.
