Jack Doohan is making it clear: he’s ready for his Formula 1 debut, and the arrival of Franco Colapinto at Alpine isn’t going to shake his confidence. Despite swirling rumors that Colapinto could potentially replace him mid-season, Doohan is standing firm, insisting that his spot at Alpine is secure and that the pressure of Formula 1 is something he’s prepared for.
The Australian rookie, set to replace the departed Esteban Ocon and partner Pierre Gasly, has been at the heart of speculation following news that Alpine is negotiating with Williams to acquire Colapinto’s services. The deal raised eyebrows in the F1 paddock, with some predicting that Colapinto could take over Doohan’s seat at some point in the season.
Adding fuel to the fire, Williams team principal James Vowles hinted that Colapinto’s release to Alpine could pave the way for his return to F1 in 2025, after a brief stint with Williams last season. However, despite the mounting reports and media attention, Doohan remains unfazed. The 21-year-old, who made his F1 debut in Abu Dhabi in December, knows all too well that pressure comes with the territory.
“There’s always pressure in Formula 1, no matter who’s inside the team or outside the team. The sport is cutthroat,” Doohan remarked in an interview with the media. “I’ve been in this position before in karting and junior formulas, and I’ve always had to prove myself. Pressure is inevitable, but I’m here to embrace it and enjoy the journey.”
When asked directly about Colapinto’s potential role in the team, Doohan remained composed, emphasizing that he was in a similar position just a year ago. “I was a 21-year-old reserve driver with a long-term contract, but no, I don’t feel undermined,” Doohan said. “I don’t really understand the question, to be honest. I’m just focused on my role and the upcoming season.”
Doohan, who has been embedded in the Alpine setup since 2022, is also looking forward to learning from his more experienced teammate, Pierre Gasly. With Gasly’s wealth of experience, including race wins and podium finishes, Doohan is eager to soak up as much knowledge as possible to maximize his own development in F1.
“It’s going to be great to work with Pierre, a driver with such a rich F1 background. He’s a race winner, and there’s a lot I can learn from him,” Doohan stated. “I’m confident that being alongside him will help me increase my capabilities and take my F1 career to the next level.”
As the season approaches, Doohan’s focus remains on what he can control—his own performance—and he’s determined to prove that he belongs on the F1 grid.
