Jack Doohan obtained the pole position for the main race of Formula 2 in Abu Dhabi this Friday. The Yas Marina journey concludes the season, with the title fight still open.
Roman Staněk (Trident) was the first to set a flying lap, but was soon beaten by Ayumu Sasaki (DAMS) and Amaury Cordeel (Invicta Virtuosi). After leading the free practice, Victor Martins (ART Grand Prix) was the next leader in qualifying. Doohan (Invicta Virtuosi) would come closer.
Later on, Martins reinforced his lead, but with 16 minutes to go he would be surpassed by Iwasa. The Japanese driver couldn’t resist Doohan’s improvement, who entered the 1m35s to take the lead. Kush Maini (Campos Racing) also improved and climbed to second place… only to lose it to Martins. The Frenchman finished 0.224s behind Doohan.
Zane Maloney (Rodin Carlin) finished fourth ahead of Iwasa. Tenth place went to Enzo Fittipaldi (Rodin Carlin), who will start from pole position in the partially inverted grid of tomorrow’s Sprint race. Beside him will be the second-placed driver in the championship, Frederik Vesti (Prema). As for the championship leader, Théo Pourchaire (ART Grand Prix), he made his task much more difficult for this weekend with a 14th place in qualifying.
