Former Alpine race driver Jack Doohan has been the target of vicious online abuse, sparking a heated debate within the racing community. Initially attributing the abuse to “Argentine fans,” Doohan later retracted his statement, pointing fingers at “multiple Argentine outlets” for perpetuating a false narrative surrounding his family.

The controversy unfolded after Doohan was replaced by Franco Colapinto for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, following a series of lackluster performances. Colapinto, a former Williams racer, faced a tumultuous debut with Alpine, marked by a qualifying crash at Imola that led to online trolls creating a fake image depicting Doohan’s father, Mick, in a derogatory light.

Taking to Instagram, Jack Doohan vehemently denounced the online abuse directed at his family, clarifying that the incendiary image was doctored by malicious individuals seeking to tarnish their reputation. Alpine, in response to the escalating situation, urged for respect among Formula 1 fans, emphasizing the need to maintain decorum both on and off the track.

Colapinto, amidst the social media storm, appealed for respect and understanding from his supporters, underscoring the importance of maintaining a positive environment within the racing community. Despite the tumultuous circumstances, Colapinto managed to secure a 16th place finish in his maiden Grand Prix with Alpine, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.

The saga surrounding Jack Doohan serves as a stark reminder of the dark side of online fandom and the repercussions of unchecked cyberbullying in the world of motorsports. As the racing world grapples with the fallout from this incident, the call for unity and respect reverberates louder than ever, underscoring the importance of fostering a culture of support and camaraderie among drivers and fans alike.
